[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today something from our spring trip to Romania. Ice stalagmites from Scarisoara cave. Extraordinary place which looks like palace of Ice Queen. I hope we'll back to this region some day.

Area=5550 m², V=40000-55000m³, depending on season.

1861 discovered.
1947 first exploration.
Description

The entrance to Peştera Scarisoara is a shaft, 48m deep and 60m wide. The hall at the ground of this abyss is filled with ice all year round. The reason for this strange situation is the height of the cave, where the winters are rather cold, and the form of the entrance: like refrigerators in supermarkets, the caves stores the low temerature, as the cold air is heavier than the warm air outside.

A stair of steep wooden and iron steps spiralles around the shaft until it reaches the bottom. This first chamber is already filled with ice. But the most impressive ice structures are found in the second chamber of the cave. With 100.000m³ it is said to be the second largest ice cave in the world. Comparable are only the Eisriesenwelt and the Dachstein-Rieseneishöhle. Impressive are the spectacular six meters high ice stalagmites.

The cave is very cold, the paths are very difficult to go. It is essential to use warm clothes and good shoes. The cave is not suitable for people with health problems.

Romania really must be exceptional. I heard so much about it lately that it seems it would've been good to see it someday.

Looks like an Ice Palace. And COLD too. So these are stalagmites. Stalactites grow down and have pointed tips, whereas stalagmites are found on the ground and are usually rounded. I'll try and remember which is which...
Nicely captured Greg. So you were there last May, hasn't time gone fast. What an interesting place to visit. Very impressive.

Czesc, bylem w podobnej jaskini w Czarnogorze, niedlugo wysle jakas fotke stamtad. Nam w tym roku niestety nie udalo sie dojechac do Scarisoary. Mielismy zbyt malo czasu i zbyt wiele do zrobienia - i jeszcze te powodzie w dodatku...
B&W dziala swietnie w przypadku takich zdjec. Bardzo ladne przejscia tonalne i umiejetne uzycie flasha.

Nice to see you have pleasant (Photo)memories from your trip. I've been here like 8 years ago, I think. To complete the note a bit: right now not entire cave is open to the public (due to preservation reasons)

Very nice and unusual capture.I liked POV,clear details,framing and your note a lot.TFS...:-)

Been there done that :) This use to be my turf for alpine and spelunking play, Greg , as a kid I was running with a yellow rain poncho and a hard hat with old school acetilene lamps of my dad or the new PETZL "lightning system" of my big brother...
P.S. Have you been to the "Meziad" or to the "Bears Cave" in Bihor? Those two are the most known. You brought me good memories

this is an excellent and very interesting Picture. Very good sharpness, details, lighting and composition. Thanks for sharing. (Near my dwelling is the Bilstein cave. It is a brook cave.)

I missed this one today, this is really cool stuff. I could just build a nice little cozy fire and sit down an stare at the stalagmites all day. Great shot Grzegorz. And yes I am A STNG fan! :)

Very interesting formation. it looks rahter ghostly and spectral. The tones are very nice and it's making me feel colder than I already am!
