[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) aka “Snakebird” or “Darter”, a female (obviously …)

OK, here are my flimsy excuses for that title, and the text in the image:

1.It is EDUCATIONAL (if bad) humour:
As the Anhinga lacks actually waterproofing oil glands (semi-functional oil glands are located towards –though not at- the rear end, see that slightly red patch under the feathers above the tail that the bird is looking at); so in this sense it certainly is not fat.

That is in fact the reason why during hunting for fish in the water this bird gets thoroughly soaked and needs to dry out.

This female perched in the tree in the wind to dry out and kept changing poses to expose all the wet feathers to the wind. It was pretty windy so she almost lost balance several times, which unfortunately introduced some camera shake as I tried to stay serious quite unsuccessfully.

There is a plus in getting soaked: the bird carries less trapped air in its plumage and is less buoyant, which makes diving for its fishy prey much easier.

2. The text improves the composition by providing more balance to it.

(Rob, if you still want to throw it out I won’t be offended. I’ll post it as a workshop instead if you don’t mind.)

Gabi,
Maybe it is the power of suggestion, but this bird's expression with its head tilted right and eye looking back and down seems to be saying exactly what you suggested in the title and composition balancing text...;-)

A very nice image Gabi and a not that made me laugh :-). Excuse number 2: "The text improves the composition by providing more balance to it", is one I need to remember very wel for my inbalanced images! I can see from the pose he's trying to keep his balance. Well written note to go with the image, with this combination Rod will have to leave the image where it is ;-)

Gabi, we know photography is also a matter of taste.

I wouldn't have the text upon the picture, but, since you like it, no problem.

I like composition and "pose". Very nice open wings and great details.

The title would probably be a winning entry for a humorous caption contest and it works great for that purpose so I dont see why you have to add it to the image too (it only detracts). But otherwise this is a very funny and nice composition. Thanks for sharing!

An excellent shot. Outstanding colors and detail. This has an almost 3D look to it. You have nailed this one really well. Exposure looks perfect to me. I shot a few of these type shots, but nothing of this quality. Well done! (I would be the perfect gentlemen and reply absolutely not!)

What a great pose you have caught, Gabi.
Very funny picture and title to fit. : )
Fantastic details on the spread-out wings... and tail. : P
I would have preferred no text on the image.
I think the "imbalance" of the picture would have given the impression that the anhinga is on the verge of losing her balance, which would have added to the tension of the shot.
Great job in any case, and TFS. : )

Gabi bonjour, excellent shot plein de vie!! Ce Snakebird séchant ces ailes au soleil est superbe de piqué et de couleurs. Bonne composition également. Le texte!! n'apporte absolument rien au contraire!! Il n'est pas utile!! la photo est assez evocatrice par elle même. Grants Didier.
