Venusta Orchard Spider ” ( Leucauge venusta )

Family Tetragnathidae = Large-jawed Orb Weavers

Size is 1/8 to 3/8 inch or 3-8 mm, the larger ones are female.

They live in Maine to Florida, west to Nebraska and Texas.
This photo was taken in Florida in the Ocala region, in a pine forest.

The almost horizontal web was in the bushes at 1.5 m height, which is pretty typical. Lots of these spiderwebs with spider waiting in the middle can be found if you look closely.

As I found only one other post of this spider on TN (and a form that had a lot of red colour from another geographical region), I have put in a more lengthy note for you below.

Cecilia's excellent post shows the same species from the other side!

Physical description:
- Cephalothorax yellowish green, striped with brown along sides.
- Slightly elongated abdomen marked with silver, yellow, black, green, and
bright orange or pink spots:
-- silvery above with dark green stripes
-- sides yellow with red or orange spot near tip,
-- red or orange spot underneath
- legs a plastic green
- two rows of long, slender curved hairs on the femurs of the fourth leg
- no tibial brushes on the legs
in appearance while the elongated abdomen is

-clings below its web or to nearby twig until prey blunders into the web and shakes it
- first bites then wraps prey, the prey being crushed by the force of its large fangs (all Tetragnathidae)

Woodland edges and shrubby meadows

Geographical range:
- southern Canada to Panama
- US: Maine to Florida, west to Nebraska and Texas,
- common in wooded areas of eastern U.S

Small insects

- delicate orb-web with open hubs
- suspended almost horizontally or in an inclined plane.
- widely spaced, spiral adhesive strands
- build in small shrubs or trees.

Life Cycle:
Egg mass attached to leaves and twigs near web. Offspring disperse and spin own webs

Taxonomic Classification:
Kingdom: Metazoa ((=Animalia) multicellular animals)
Phylum: Arthropoda (arthropods)
Class: Arachnida (spiders, harvestmen, scorpions, mites, etc.)
Order: Araneae (spiders)
Family: Tetragnathidae (longjawed orbweavers)
Genus: Leucauge
Species: Leucauge venusta
Common Names: Orchard Orbweaver, Orchard Spider

It look not of this world! Mother Nature has been realy creative with this spider.
Wow, I'm glad you showed it here, otherwise I had never thought that such a cracy animal would exist. I love your sharp and crisp shot so much, thanks a lot, so interesting.

This looks like one of the most beautifull juwels I've seen. Amazing colours and the look of polished metal. I'm really jealous here that you were able to capture one this beautifull. I'm glad you are sharing it with us though :-)

this is it, the ultimate spider picture. Congratulations
Cheers, Dietrich

Good job on this one!
For me, photographing spiders and their webs is hit and miss and it is not easy getting close when using a tripod; hand held cameras tend to move, my shadow always falls onto the scene, and any breeze or breath will send a shudder through the web.
The spider itself if beautiful, especially in the ambient light presented.
