Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis Pyramidalis). These orchids are very often found on chalky grounds, poor grass fields, open bushy zones, highway slopes. Here, it's very different. The association I'm working with has a vast program of restoration of chalky hills of the Seine valley, west of Paris, up to the sea. When agriculture disappeared on these hills (due to intensive mechanization after 1945), land has been progressively invaded by bushes, choking all ground vegetation. The objective is to clean some of these surfaces (mechanically first, then putting sheep to keep up the land). What you see here is the reapparence of Orchids on a glade opened last winter.
Size: up to 50cm. Color: from pale pink to dark red, sometimes bicolor. Visible from march to september, best months being may, june, july.
When young, sharp top, becoming round. Protected species.
Original in TIFF mode, postprocessed on PS: cropped out, brightness -15, contrast +20. Reduced at TN size, saved below 200Ko in jpg.

Good shot! You've captured this pyramidal nicely. Funny really, I was just thinking about putting up a few of the orchid shots I've taken this year (not many unfortunately). Anyway, focus is good, DOF is good, and the composition is nice - although since the sky was white I think I'd have considered a slightly higher angle I think to keep it out of the frame. I hope you can encourage these and other species to grow, keep up the good work :-D

Jean, Good shot with good color & detail! I like the big & small approach..Too bad you couldn't have grabbed some blue-sky on this one!! ;-)

Jean Michel, outstanding colors of the plant. The blurred BG highlights the beauty of the orchid. Nice composition too.
