Colaptes campestris

In Portuguese, pica-pau-do-campo; in English, campo flicker.

The Woodpeckers are a large family of similarly designed birds found in forested areas around the globe. The have specially evolved to deal with chiseling wood, including "shock-absorber" head musculature, extremely long tongues, and stiff tail feathers helping them perch upright on trees. Woodpeckers are often a "core species" of the woodland avifauna [except in two major areas that don't have any woodpeckers: Australasia and Madagascar].

Woodpeckers come in a great variety of shapes and colors. One group are the flickers which specialize in feeding on the ground, often focussing on ants. The Campo Flicker (above) of southern South America is such a species and a very striking bird to boot. Yet even it has the stiffly pointed specialized tail feathers that held woodpeckers perch vertically on tree trunks.

Huh, interesting, Livio.
I have never seen a woodpecker with yellow face.

Hi Livio!

This one looks really great! I love its colours and slightly surprised face. It is another 'bird on a wire' from you and as always composition and colours are strong side of your photo.

This is a nice shot that has sharp details. Hope you Have a Great year in capturing new photos. :)

Very nice shot of your woodpecker Livio.
Well composed with sharp detail and great color my friend. Well done.
P.S. Hey, I spotted an armadillo a couple of hours ago here. I tried to get a shot of it, going after it in my shorts through the thorny brush. I came back with a shot but scratched the heck out of my legs in the process..That was fun ;-}

Great colours, compo and detail. The yellow contrasts nicely with the complementary colour in the blue sky.
