[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was driving back to Baker City from Burnt River Canyon looking for Bighorns and rattlesnakes and this Red Tail Hawk was standing in the middle of the highway. As I was approaching the Hawk in my car two other cars going in the opposite direction had to swerve to miss it, and as I realized that it may be hurt I stopped. I got out and stood beside it and saw that it had indeed hurt its leg and wing, probably hit the fence, I then retreated to my truck and drew out of the back of my truck a long burlap pad and quickly opened it above the hawk. It sprang over to its back, with talons extended and wings outstretched in a defensive measure, and as it did so I threw the burlap over its body. I then picked it up and placed it in the truck, keeping it unable to venture to the front of the truck. I took it home and did eventually get it to eat some warmed up meat, and the following Monday I took it to the Wildlife Service and they then took it to the Vet.
It was a beautiful Hawk, however, it's wing was not repairable and subsequently had to be put to sleep.
I had no problem with it as I sat with it in the basement through the first night and gained some trust from it.
Sorry to see it go....

Beautiful colours and patterns. Excellent eye contact.

Nicely done and a very sad story

Lovely shot. Good play of bright and dark areas. Very expresive eyes: it was the first thing that atracted my sight.
