Hedgehog Fly (Dejeania sp. maybe bombylans?)

Family: Tachinidae
Or also know as Tachinid flies. Medium sized flies often covered in strong bristles. Mostly ID can be ensured only under microscope. Adults feed on nectar and have a peculiar buzzing sound in flight.

All species’ larvae are internal parasites of insects. Larvae feed first on non-vital organs of the host and attack vitals only when they are ready to pupate.

Pass me the fava beans and a nice chianti, Clarice!

Butterfly and moths are the most common hosts. Females may lay eggs directly into the host or on a plant the larvae will find their way to a host. They are an important species agriculturally, as they suppress populations of injurious moth caterpillars. There are 377 species in SA.

This is one ugly fly! To say I hope you like it, may be futile. ;)

Ugly could be nice :-) Your photo is great, but this fly...well - not :-)

Disgustingly cool little creature ... Nice details work and good note !

Mmmmm,looks tasty....if you're a mantis.
Excellent photo Gerhard! He looks a bit mangy. Do you think he's losing hair or just starting to grow it? Reminds me of Jack Nicholson early in the morning.

Gerhard, You must be getting quite the suntan hangin' out by the pool so often! ;-)) An excellent macro showing this little Hedgehog in fine detail. You really are stretching your macro legs here!! Great post!!!

An excellent capture of this spiny/hairy little beastie!
Excellent detail and great DoF.
Great title and a great note.
Very well done.

These flyes are really strange, I can still remember one similar to this called something like Tachina fera published here in TN. It seems wet, and that ground looks like your swiming pool... did you rescue it? Greetings.

He looks like a toilet brush! What a bristly specimen he is! Good work Gerhard, excellent detail. Yes, it is ugly.

Gerhard, You are right I don't like the fly but the shot is cool!
Greetings, Jan

A real WoW of a macro so much detail we see here gerhard, as you say the whole family are a nasty bunch though I susepect that with-out them we would be over run by certain pest species.
I know it is probably not available but the DOF just drops off as it leaves the far side and it just feels as though it could do with a fraction more.

very great detail sharpness and contrast, very very great shot

Gerhardt dit smaak my jy word al hoe beter. Goed gedoen. This is an outstandingly good picture with good notes. Keep em coming

i'm sorry but i was laughing the hell out of me with your title!!haha, nicely found!
great shot, excelent compo, as it is not to centerd, dof is good to, details are good and so is the colour.well done!

Now, do tell this chap to spruce up before he poses for another photo session. It's bad enough that he's got stubble everywhere, but being covered in sand as if he's just come from a romp with the missus is just not decent ;-))
Great capture with very good DOF (I see you worked for that) and excellent details, fading in and out nicely.

This has to be the most bizzare fly I've even seen. Can't imagine what reaction I'd have if one landed on me....eeekk.
Brilliant macro composition, there is nothing to critique, its just damn good.
