A Glasswing or Little Greasy (Acraea andromacha) a reasonably common species from south-eastern and tropical Australia.
Adults have a slow buoyant flight with long glides interrupted by several wingbeats. The forewings are translucent and the hindwings have a number of cream dots along the edge of the wing. This species has a wingspan of 50-55mm and breeds year round in the tropics but probably only once in the southern temperate zone.
They live in forests and woodlands interspersed with grasslands, where groups of adults can be found congregating in preferred areas at dusk and rest on the ends of grass seeds such as illustrated here.
I found one such area by accident near Lapstone at the base of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. I was walking along a favoured trail after work when I decided to take a different route back to my car as dusk approached. To my surprise, an open area with a few weeds and grasses was suddenly populated by perhaps 20 of this species and they soon settled onto the grass heads. I had to use an ISO of 200 due to the low light and took several hand-held shot, of which this one was the best. Perhaps not an outstanding shot, but I was happy with the result.
Thanks for looking.

Hi, Chris
It's always a treat to see a new species. A curiously peaceful, appealing image of a roosting butterfly. Nicely composed, too.
Regards, Nigel.

Hi Chris,
Superb composition with the subject so well isolated from the backround on that single plant. Great shades of Black,White, and Greys, then Yellow on the face/head area. Looks great!

Very romantic harmonious composition. Nice "icy" colors, especially the grass seed and the pastel background. Congratulations for this beautiful find, hope you could reach your car before complete nightfall :-) Patrick

I like this simple and smart composition, it is nearly in B&W. Great sharpness and good use of DOF for a neutral BG.
Congratulation Chrs and thanks for sharing.

Nice shot of this beauty. Good colours and composition.
Very nice yellow "face" ;-D

It is always nice to read an interesting note about the way the photo was taken. The image has a bit of noise but its quality does not suffer from it. On the contrary, the noise adds "texture". The POV is great with the diagonal composition giving the image a strong support. The blurred background is pleasant. Well done, indeed. It pays to take a different route once in a while!

A beautiful shot. The sharpness, the composition, the colouring of the background and the little bit of yellow standing out! Superb!
