[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a challenge to the ornithologists here. I am really hoping someone can help me identify this bird. To look at this bird I think bird of prey, yes? Talons, aggressive beak, and agile shape. However, this bird and several hundred of his friend were hanging about a dump picking up scraps. My guess is that the birds are migrating since the winter is ending now and they will eat anything. I've only seen birds of prey alone or possibly with a mate but never with such a large group. They act more like seagulls. Anyone with knowledge of birds from this region of the world?

This was also a great time to try out my new 70-200 2.8F L lens. This image is the result of cropping that probably takes the image to 150% of its original given that I was about 70 meters away. I am pretty happy with the results.

Nice shot Sean. I like it a lot. This raptor looks like a Red Shouldered Hawk. I could be wrong. I don't know weather they are in your part of the world of not. It is indeed a bird of prey.

Welcome! Your bird is a Black Kite Milvus migrans - 100% certainty. They are sociable and sometimes hundreds of birds roost together. As you say, they are scavengers and often feed in large numbers on rubbish dumps. The image is very slightly soft/grainy as a result of the crop, but it's a nice flight shot.

Hi Sean, nice shot. Not easy to get birds in flight. It's a good capture, perhaps a little soft in focus but top marks for getting it in flight. Well done.

Nice flight shot - especially considering the distance not bad at all!!
I agree with 'Merlin' this is a Black Kite and from your description they could've been in migration. I know that they arrive in Southern Africa for our summer Sept - March so the time the photo was taken could tie in with that.
The Black Kite and Yellow-billed Kite's are very similar though yellow-billed Kite's as their name suggests have a fully yellow beak whereas Black Kites as shown here have a black tip.
