Scrawled Filefish (Aluterus scriptus)

Scrawled Filefish are as shy as they are funny looking. It is hard to get very close to these big fish, as they will simply swim away if divers get too close to them. So I was lucky to get to see this peculiar fish as it swam near me along the reef.

West Chute is a little canyon that cuts through the reef between the north shore of Cayman Brac and the underwater dropoff offshore. Swimming along the sand at the bottom of this little canyon, I saw this Scrawled Filefish swim along the wall of the canyon. By waiting quietly, soon this fish approached me close enough to for me to take this picture.

This adult Scrawled Filefish was about 30 inches long. Notice the many spines in its tail fin. The Scrawled Filefish swims by wiggling its dorsal fin from side to side. You can see how the dorsal fin is bent sideways in this picture.

Hi Alain,
This is a very interesting and unique looking fish. Very cool composition as he swims by this coral. Colors and detail look amazing.
You can almost feel the textures in this shot. Very well done!

Nice shot Alain, looks like the fish is swimming over a maze, nice colors and details. TFS

A very interesting composition, Alain.
The convolutions on the brain coral look like a maze, as do the line designs on the fish. Also they are color coordinated... in yellow. : )
TFS. : )

Very nice capture Alain, the angle is very nice. Brilliant stuff!

Very cool shot, the texture of the coral and the pattern and colors of the fish are fantastic. Good to see you posting again Alain. :)

Hi Alain,
great shot.
Well done

I like how the fish seems to match the corral, nice shot.

Hello Alain
You have managed to capture this fish in such a way that its markings and the patterns on the corral are very similar. Great shot that was worth your patience.
The composition is striking and the colours are very natural. The DOF is superb and it is showing some excellent details on the fish and on the corral. The exposure was superbly managed.
What really amazed me is that shutter speed at 1/30. This must have been rather challenging to accomplish. I mean, to get the fish to lie still for that moment and to overcome whatever movements were created by the underwater currents surely took some doing.
This is extremely well done and TFS.

Bonjour Alain,
très belle photo, j'aime beaucoup les balistes écriture.
La composition en diagonale est bienvenue, et l'éclairage au flash est particulièrement réussi.
Y a-t'il une petite crevette sur la queue du poisson?

Very good composition with the coral and the fish! Sharpness is good and we see even the shadow of the fish over the coral. Great capture, my friend Alain!

Hi Alain,
great shot with amazing colors and a beautiful composition.
Sharpness is fine.
