Common Rose (Pachliopta aristolochia)

Order: Lepidoptera

Family: Papilionidae

Wing span: 3 - 3.5 inches (75 - 85 mm)

Habitat: The Common Rose is primarily found in lowland forest with occasional visits to the surrounding areas.

Host Plant: The larvae feed on a variety of plants which include Aristolochis tagala, Apama and Thottea.

Life History: Males patrol the habitat looking for females. After mating the female searches for host plants to lay her eggs on. The caterpillars feed on the host plant until they form their chrysalis.

Adult Food Source: The adults can be found feeding on a variety of flowers.

Flights: During the spring and summer months there are a couple generations in the northern part of their range, while in the south it can be possible to find adults year round.

Fun Facts: The Common Rose is considered to be a distasteful butterfly to most predators and displays its colors and pattern to warn predators of its status. One of the female forms of the Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) is even considered to be a mimic of the Common Rose.

A great composition, Pam.
Those long tails seem to balance and anchor the butterfly perched precariously on that leaf. Beautiful colors and sharp details. The black comes across as velvety, daintily highlighted by those spots of pink. TFS. : )

Hi Pam ,
Congratulations...Marvelous shot. Good details, nice colors, POV, sharpness, composition and framing are magnificent.TFS...

great pov, details and composition.
the shape of the wings looks so cool.
superb job, thor.

Another attractive butterfly with not much to critique.
I suppose the only thing I've noticed with your butterfly series from this amazing place you visit regularly, is that you don't alway say where the species comes from.
Congratulations on 500+ shots, I don't know where you find the time!

Hi Pam!
I think black/red colour combination is best for butterflies. This is very good example. Stylish and beautifull. I love shape of its wings and colours.

Hi Pam
I must be honest with you; I am a little bit at a loss for words to comment on this photo. It seems like your butterfly shots are so perfect that one tends to repeat oneself with all the WELL DESERVED 'nice-nice' critiques.
Maybe you should start to photograph some micro-organisms or something similarly challenging, so that we can have something to 'criticise' and rip apart, or even have an opportunity to give you a workshop. When last did you have the honour of a workshop on one of your postings, in order to rectify, modify, or edify any of your work?
Of course you can get all upset and blow a couple of fuses for what I just said, or you can recognise the fact that it is just a roundabout way to tell you 'GREAT STUFF'. Your butterflies are magic and you deserve every bit of credit for you excellent work.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Pam,
Very nice macro shot on this beautiful butterfly,
excellent composition, great colour and details.
Well done!

Interesting specimen, and well captured.
I fully endorse what Loot says above. You are too good for butterflies now.

Very nice butterfly again Pam, I guess we have seen the same ones in different continents. Very smooth background, sharp details, well composed. Thanks. All positive.

Hi Pam,
Very nice detail and exposure, great colors..
I understand the conditions you face with these, in low-light. If ya could've squeezed out a bit more DOF, it would be better here IMHO. Well done.
