Green tiger beetle (Cicindela campestris)

I found lots of this beetles hunting on road on the edge of the pine forest. It is very sunny and warm place. There are always lots of flies and other creatures basking in the sun there, so I guess it's a good place for predators, such as these beetles.

At first, despite their vivid colours, it's very hard to notice them. All you can see is something flying away from under your feet. When you carefully get closer to the ground you can see this green jewels somewhere among dry grass and pine needles.
They are very cautious and when you get too close they will quickly run away, or make a fast, buzzing short flight and sit a little further.

These beetles are fearsome predators. Their large eyes give them a very good sight, long legs - ability to run very fast when attack their victims. When the prey is catched it surely has a little chance to survive. Just look at this huge mandibles.

I took quite many pictures of this fellow. That's not the most easy thing because it's hard to get close enough. I noticed however, that when you are patient and quite carefull the beetle seem to get used to you and doesn't even try to run away anymore.

I had huge problem with harsh light when taking these pictures. I had to use flash to level the lights and shadows and minimalize contrasts, but it's still not perfect. Anyway, maybe some of you haven't seen this green jewels yet, so here is one of them.

Hi Monika,
A great shot of this amazing looking Beetle. The colours are fantastic, metallic green with purple legs, I've never seen one before. Excellent detail and nice framing, I like the way his legs reach out to the bottom of the frame. Great work!

Hi Monika, I think you have handled the contrasts very well. The colours and detail are excellent, almost metallic like. The focus has dropped off at the front slightly but still an excellent shot. I have never seen one of these before so thanks for sharing.
Kind regards,

Hi Monika,
Excellent macro. Point of view, clear details, framing and colors are very good. Congratulations...

Hello Monika, very interesting insect both in colour and form. As you mentioned the light is harsh but fill flash has helped. Good POV and I like the brown tones of the BG. Great capture with good note, well done.

Hi Monika
This is definitely a first for me as I have never seen it before. Thanks for introducing me to it. It sure looks like a formidable hunter and reading your notes confirms the deadly arsenal it has.
Your composition looks good and the colours are vivid and rich. The DOF is super showing excellent details on the insect. The BG is fine and works well with this shot and the exposure (with the fill-in flash) was perfectly handled.
Very well done and TFS.

An attractive, yet fearsome looking beast.
Good use of the fill flash, contrast looks good.
A touch short of DOF, but I haven't seen this guy before, so it was well worth the post.

Hi Monika, Excellent photo, perfect colors and contrast, excellent, Details with great DOF, Perfect, TFS Kyle

Hello Monika,

What a capture you have here. Very sharp and perfect exposure that leaves no question to what the Tiger Beetle actually appears to others in the insect world. I'd run if I were them...
Exceptional shot---

Hi Monika!
Fantastic, shinning colours! Congratulations! These beetles are really fast and hard to hunt. Details are nice, same as sharpness and light. Dry leaves made good BG. VERY interesting note!

Czesc Moniko!
