Spiders generally like to eat other spiders.

The fact that females of many species eat their mates is well known, but some spiders specialize in hunting down other species of spiders. Some others eat generally anything edible that they are able to catch.

On the picture you can see a male Raft Spider Dolomedes fimbriatus eating Pirate Wolf spider Pirata sp. I'm not sure about the victim though.

Raft spiders are very interesting species of quite big spiders living near water. They are active hunters and among their typical victims you can find insects (even as big as damselflies), small fishes, tadpoles as well as small frogs. As you can see on the picture spiders are also a part of their diet.

I had ocassion to see the moment in which the spider catched his victim. It was a bit weird actually, but that what's happened. I was walking on the river bank looking for Dolomedes spiders. I saw one sitting on a blade of grass the top of which was above the water. When I got closer I scared a lizard which run into the water (I wrote a bit about that "water lizards" in one of my last posts). Anyway, the lizard scared a wolf spider that run straight into the "arms" of Dolomedes.
The Raft spider started to eat his meal immediatelly and I could see the moving legs of the wolf spider that was in fact eating alive.

The picture is not exactly what I wanted. The light was harsh and I had to use flash to get some details on the prey. That gave a bit unnatural light. Anyway, I thought the picture will be interesting for you, so here it is.

Hi Monika,
Excellent macro, very good detail and natural colour. Great title and gory (but interesting!) note :-) At first I thought Dolomedes' legs should be in the shot, but after looking at this I think it works well, nicely composed. Great work!

Hi Monika,
You really seem to like those creepy-crawlies.....and from the poses you manage to catch them in they don't seem to mind you at all.Another lovely image (despite your self-critisism) with great composition and wonderful detail...the light not so bad.Poor old wolf spider!
Regards, David

Privet Monika
Good detailed elaboration even at 4,8 allows to make out this spider well. You have photographed the infrequent moment of hunting. Good work.

No no no ale bestia :-) Pięknie pokazana. Bardzo dobry kadr, kolory i GO.

Piekna scena - technicznie swietne.

It is a delight to look at your portfolio in detail, Monika.
Today I enjoyed looking at this fantastic image of a spider eating another.
Your note supplied the relevant information to understand this dramatic struggle for existence in the best possible way.
I'm a little dumb about technology, hence the question: Do you use special lenses to take such beautiful pictures, Monika?
