Bluering Angelfish - Pomacanthus annularis

Another photo that was taken at the aquarium in the Pretoria Zoo and it is the first photo of this species on TrekNature. As I said with my previous aquarium fish posting, I quickly realised that this kind of photography is not as easy as I anticipated. The reflection and the marks on the glass was a major handicap that I quickly had to figure out otherwise I could forget to continue with the shoot. The density of the water, the surface of the fish (which vary from very bright to rather dark even within the same fish), the general activities of the other fish in the tank, the colourful and close proximity of the water plants and coral - all added to a difficult shoot. I needed to be very sure that I knew exactly how to interpret the LCD on my camera, otherwise I might found that all the photos that looked so good on the LCD actually were either over exposed or under exposed. Sorry, that would have been too late, because once I was back home the aquarium is 700km away and there is no time for a re-shoot. The workshop is just a splash of colour in one of the tanks at the aquarium.

More cool facts about the Pretoria Zoo

- The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is a proud facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF).
- It is the largest zoo in the country and the only one with national status.
- The 80-hectare zoo houses 2586 specimens of 126 mammal species, 1425 specimens of 158 bird species, 4189 specimens of 283 fish species, 235 specimens of 21 invertebrate species, 447 specimens of 90 reptile species, and 29 specimens of 4 amphibian species.
- More than 600 000 people visit the zoo annually.
- The aquarium is the largest inland marine aquarium in the country and it is the only one that makes use of artificial sea water. Source

The similarity between juvenile forms of this fish and the Koran or Emperor angelfish can be a source of great confusion! In the Koran the white stripes are slightly curved or shaped, but they are much more curved near the tail forming a completely closed ellipse in the Emperor. In the Bluering Angelfish the white stripes are almost straight, only the ends curving inward slightly towards the tail. Diagonal blue lines on sides, a blue ring behind the eye, and a white tail. Up to 45 cm.

Indo-West Pacific: East coast of Africa, throughout Indonesia and New Guinea to New Caledonia, north to southern Japan.

Inhabits coastal rocky reefs to at least 30m. A non-migratory marine fish. Adults are often found inside caves where one male defends a territory with two to five females living with the male.

Omnivorous, eating benthic invertebrates such as zooplankton, sponges, tunicates, coral polyps, algae, weeds, and nektonic fishes. Source.

WOW, Loot... That fish is gorgeous.
I know well the difficulties that you speak of, because I have encountered them in my many aquarium shots as well... which is why I am all the more impressed with your post. You have overcome all those obstacle to produce a shot with perfect focus and exposure, dazzling colors and patterns, wonderful POV and composition. A fantastic capture, my friend, Congratulations, and TFS. : )

Hi Loot,
this is a great shot of a lovely fish. And yes, this is not easy to shoot fish in an a aquarium, To avoid all reflections I use to hold the front-lens tight to the glass, if it's possible, Then the glass act like a filter.
Well composed, lovely colours and very good details.
Great work, my friend.

I'm on my way out in the lovely spring morning, time is 0550.
Hope to see new birds, see you later.

Hi Loot, having had my own difficulties at a local aquarium, I can appreciate the technical excellence of this shot. Exposure, compo and focus are superb on this beautiful fish.

Hi Loot
Nice colours on this fish and in the background. Very sharp and clear image, nice job, regards

another fantastic fish loot,
realy nice image, the pov is good again, the colours are super, i know that it is not easy to made a shot like this one, great job.

Wooow ! What a wonderful and interesting fish that you have very well captured ! This species is realy superb like the quality of this shot. I also appreciate the complementary note... Congratulations Loot and thanks for sharing.

Hi Loot,
I once used my video camera in an aquarium and most of the time I was filming myself or a little red light was in the picture. So I know how difficult it is to make a photo that looks like no glass is in front of it, besides the glass of the lens and filter ofcourse. You managed to do it again. Great color and exposure and as sharp as my lawyer. I just love the pose of the fish.

Excellent shot Loot! Great colours, lighting and excellent sharpness. Great POV and excellent note too. This is an excellent composition. Thank you for sharing with us.

Hi Loot, what a pretty striped iridescently striped fish. Well captured through the glass - not an easy thing to do at all. He is nice and sharp all over. Strange looking creature too. Well done Loot, thank you for sharing,

Hello Loot,
I must confess I'm not very keen on underwater photography. My interest lie in quite different areas of wildlife photography.
These picture however draw my attention. This is because of two reasons. First one is obvious, the picture has great colours and is very pleasant to look at. The blue neon stripes on the fish are really striking.
The second reson is the quality of this picture. You simply can't tell if it was taken through the glass or not and the details are very sharp and clear. I've never even tried to take such pictures, but I realize how difficult from the optical point of view it can be, after all I'm studying physics ;-)
It's a great shot!

PS. Interesting WS. I can't help with IDs, but I know for sure that corals are not plants. These are animals :-)

Hi Loot,
Remarkable camera craft, given all the difficulties you mention it looks as if this is an underwater shot. A beautiful fish that seems to be looking at you! Excellent colours (something else that usually works against these shots is poor colour), perfect detail and the shadow from flash looks entirely natural hidden away in the rocks. Great work my friend!

Hi Loot,
WOW! I have to say I think you nailed this one perfectly! Stunning colors, and very sharp detail. Perfect frame filling tight crop on the shot. Outstanding work. You shoud print and frame this one.

Hi Loot!

My reputation in UW photography is endangered by yours. Focus and exposure are excellent. Composition and tight cropping put emphasis on the fish. Even known you took it in an aquarium, you well controled any reflexion that could have betray a technic.

Excellent shot and TFS.

Hi Loot
What a colours. Great shot. Good sharpnes, details, BG and POV. Also good note.
Well done

Another great underwater image. I can't sort out how you are able to use fill flash through glass. I've failed miserably at both our acquarium and our zoo (shooting the pandas and reptiles). Any advice?

Have a great week, my South African friend!

Hey Loot! A lot of underwater photos I've seen have a bad focus. Not sure what the problem is, but THIS photo is definitely an exception. It has beautiful colors, a beautiful focus, and beautiful lighting. Did you do something to dim the flash or otherwise control it? Everytime I use the flash on my camera it really washes out everything in view... it makes everything look way too bright. Anyway, beautiful photo here!!! Great job!

Hello Loot,

Awesome picture of this AngelFish! Everything is perfect in my eyes! The natural colors, the colorful bg, the dof, the pov and the composition are wonderful! Thank you very much for sharing that wonderful picture with us!!!

Michel (whoi is very impressed!)

Hi Loot,
you seem to be an underwater wizard equipped with a high energy remote flash tightly pressed against the glass - making that fairy tale fish's neon scales shine in the reflected flash light with overpowering brilliance.
Delightful colours, excellent details, and great depth.
Thank you! Best regards,

Hi Loot, very colourful fish. Good details and a nice composition. I think I would have opened up a bit here as the fish is pretty flat and it would've blurred the BG a bit more and given a fast shutter speed. Well done.

Hi, Loot.
Very nice fish and good shot for aquarium. Excellent sharpness and colors.

You got your self a stunner here Loot, colours ,focus are all wonderful :)

Hello Loot,
This is another great posting from your aquarium visit..
Colors, light, DOF, detail, and POV are all excellent...Luv these amazing colors & markings..This fish has it goin' on :)
Very well done.

Hi Loot!
I normally tend to avoid underwater pictures, mainly because I have zero experience of underwater.
So I read your note first and when I realized it was an aquarium shot, I had another look.
And wow, what a shot! Simply amazing in focus, sharpness, clarity and colours.
It is one of the lovliest aquarium fishes I have ever seen.
Thanks for sharing this great image.

Hi Loot

Nice shot, yes, I do agree with you, it is very hard. but you are do it very nice, very nice usage of flash, good DOF and POV. perfect. it is like you were under the water.

Another nice shot of this flippery fish, and again it has a cool electric appearance with the nice flash fill effect. :)

There aren't enough fish photos on here in my opinion, I love 'em!
Same it's taken in a tank and not actually in the ocean but you need a pretty expensive case for that! Great sharp detail and lovely colours and contrast!

Hello Loot
Since I am well on my way working through your "Ichthyology" gallery I might as well finish the lot. This is what happens when you enjoy what you are doing and then you just cannot stop, hahaha. This is a pleasurable journey and you made me want to trade my fresh water fish tank for a marine aquarium. These fishes are so beautiful and once more you have posted a photo with such class and quality. Typical of most of your aquarium photos you managed to isolate the fish from the beautiful coral background. The usage of the flash was so well done that I can even see the detail in the see-through fins and the white tail fin does not even have a bit of overexposure. Those blue lines on the fish lights up like little neon tubes and no wonder your title has reflected on that attribute. Another super aquarium photo taken through a thick glass.

Hallo my friend Loot

Since there is still nothing new, and my fingers are now aching to write something to one of your photos, I am going back once more and choose this beautiful fish to leave my smiley at.

Looking at this colourful and bright angelfish, I forget about the aches and pains and think back to the time when I was still a youngster and we danced the night away with the neon lights flashing in all different and shocking colours. When you finally go home, your eyes are as big as saucers still trying to recover from all the brightness that has been flashing in them all the time.

I cannot describe what I really think of the technical excellence of this shot. Words fail me. The lightning, focus and camerawork are just tops.

Well I’ll repeat myself!
With you behind the camera, we cannot expect less. Expertly done. Thanks once again for the great educational lesson in your note.

Warmest regards

Ps. I’ll be visiting again tomorrow, and I hope there might just be a new posting.
But what the heck. Something old …….something new……….they are all good……….just like you.

Hi Loot

amazing fish, TFS Ori

Hallo Loot
A delightful image of this appealing and most beautiful fish. Details captured are clear and a pleasure to look at. The assortment of bright colours is super and ever so striking. I just love the blue stripes running accross the nose and the golden circle in the eye. Focus and sharpness is great and I can only but appreciate this fine image. Like the previous fish postings this was indeed a pleasure to look at and appreciate. Thanks for sharing. Love
