Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve

Winter started with a sudden surprise. We had temps of 25C and suddenly it dropped to 2-3C. One can see the frost on the railings of the bird hide. I trust my friends in the Northen Hemisphere are enjoying their summer. :)

Rietvlei Dam Nature Reserve is one of the very few reserves situated in the grassland biome on the central South African highveld. It is therefore not very rich in diversity of species, but hosts many of the South African endemics and provides a very relaxing spot for a few hours’ birding. Around 80 species can be expected in a morning or afternoon trip.

The reserve consists mainly of grassland habitats. The Rietvlei and Marais Dams on the Sesmyl Spruit provide a wealth of open water and wetland habitats, and some of the smaller inlet streams create spongy marshes. Along the Sesmyl Spruit is some dense woodland, supporting quite a different bird community. The latter habitat is especially well developed below the dam wall but this is an area of restricted access. Isolated thornveld thickets consisting mostly of Acacia karoo are found throughout the reserve. Exotic trees such as poplars, gums and wattles cover a lot of ground, but the reserve management is actively controlling these problem species.

It was my first time at this venue and as I waited for the sun to rise I saw this scene. I don't usually do landscapes and would love to hear your take on the photo.

Hi Gerhard!
Great to see you again! Today, during my walk in Botanic Garden I wondered how are you and where are you and our others SA friends.
Winter? No, impossible in your place :-) Beautifull morning, full of delicate colours and lightplay. I like composition with trees on horizon. Great capture my friend.

Just stunning, love the colour and the mist, would look nice framed.

Hi Gerhard
Nice to hear from you for a change.
You have captured a remarkable tranquil mood reflected in this photo. Lovely stuff. I can almost feel the cold all the way here where I am sitting in the heat of Zululand.
The composition is splendid and the colours are absolutely stunning. You managed the exposure brilliantly to achieve this lovely play of colours.
Very well done and TFS.

Hi Gerhard,
it's great to see a post from you again.
This is a lovely landscape with nice mood and great light
Well composed and good deep.
Excelelnt work, my friend.

BTW; winter? Where is the snow.:-))

Hi Gerhard
Excellent colors and greta light

Hi Gerhard,
I think your landscape effort is superb. A beautiful gradient of pastel colors in the sky. The mist and fog off the water add a great feel to the shot. I really like your composition with the hand rails coming from the lower left and taking your eyes to the center of the shot. Excellent!

Nice one Gerhard, a beautifully captured sunrise , loks like the start of a nice day, here on the little island off the mainland of europe it seems to done nothing but be dull and overcast with rain from time to time not conducive to good shots like this . TFS yours Robert

Hi Gerhard, your landscape is superb. I love the pastel colors in the sky with the fog low over the water and the ground. Your building is very well placed on the third. I might have cropped off a bit from the sky, but the darker blue shows up well there, so maybe not! Super job,
It's good to see you. . . Winter has arrived here in NZ, but the odd hot days thrown in again now and then unsettle us!

Hello Gerhard,

Well, my take on your picture is that it is stunning. The composition and the colors are magnificent. I'm glad you ventured into landscape photography. It would have been a shame for this scene to go unrecorded.

Evelynn : )

Hello Gerhard,
this is very nice landscape with very nice colours, lighting and sharpness/POV. This is a wonderful composition. Thank you for posting.

Hello Gerhard

Nice to see a post from you and what a beauty! I love the composition as the eye can't help but follow rail which leads you to the lovely colours and magical silhouettes. Quality work as always. Thank you!

You have captured the winter feel excellently. I live only 3km from this lovely venue and must congratulate you on a good pic here. The Silhouette, colours and composition make this very appealing to the eye indeed. TFS,

Hi Gerhard, haven't seen you here for a while.
A stunning shot with the eye being drawn to a most stunning sun rise.
You should try landscapes more often if this is anything to go by.
A beautiful composition, thank you for sharing.

Hello Gerhard!
Great to see you posting.
"I don't usually do landscapes" sounds oddly familar :)
I enjoy this composition very much. You have lead the eye into the frame nicely. It conveys winter & the sudden temp. change well, with the frost covered rails and barren trees...The graduated colors of the early morning sky "ice" it ;-}}
Very well done mf.

Hallo Gerhard,

Goed om te sien dat jy toe wel by Rietvlei uitgekom het. Dit is 'n pragtige foto. Die komposisie is uitstaande, en die kleure is baie mooi. Geluk.

Hi Gerhard,

Amazing landscape.
Great colors and exposition.
I like it.
Well done!

TFS :-)

Hello Gerhard,
This is great! It has really cold mood and I can't really believe it have been taken in South Africa. Lovely colours, great POV and framing.
I like it a lot!

So nice to see you Gerhard! I love the glow you've captured here, amazing what you catch when you're up early. You should do more landscapes, this one is lovely. The railing of the fence leads the eye right out to that glow in the sky. Very nicely done, I like the mist that seems to be rising from the water.

Hi Gerhard!

A very nice mood you captured here. And this belong only to early birds. Perfect exposure reveal nice shade in the sky and enough details in shadows to reveal a 3D dimension (full black shadows looks more 2D than 3D). The balanced composition is pleasant for the eyes.

A very nice and artistic image that can be hang on a wall. And TFS.

Magnificent POV with wonderful colors. This is a great landscape, you should do more of them!

Wonderful - really wonderful. the mist over the water, the composition the colours, really great.

Hello Gerhard

Since I my "absence" from TN I have spend some time browsing through the daily "storm" of pictures. I have - of course - also looked at your posts and returned to this one several times.

It is a very calm scenario which gives me pleasure an peace in mind. Really I would like to have this one as a poster on my wall in the living room. The colours are great and bring peace to my mind. The composition is very good as well as the colours.

Right now I am sitting with a single malt and a good cigar enjoying your picture and thinking - This could be the place to spend the rest of my time on this crazy planet.

My god I do wish I get the chance to see your magnificent country.

Have a nice weekend
