[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello Dear TN Friends,
Just few hours ago I have come back home from a wonderful two-week trip to southern Florida. Camping in Everglades, being eaten by mosquitos, watching birds, approaching alligators, overlooking a coral reef... all that brought me some 1000 photos, of which a few I would like to share with you... And althought I'm very tired and jet-lagged, I take a chance to show you this Great White Heron spotted while resting in dense mangrove forest.

Great White Heron is a southern Florida white colour morph of Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias), closely related to European heron Ardea cinerea.

With its wingspan up to 130cm it's the largest American heron. The species is highly adaptable, occuring everywhere from tropical mangroves to desert rivers, and as far north as southeastern Alaska. It feeds mainly on fish but takes also other small animals (amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and even birds). Hunts both day and night.

This shot was taken during the first day of my trip, on Key Largo in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Established in 1963, the state park was the first undersea park created in the United States. The park, combined with the adjacent Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, encompasses 178 nautical square miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps. These areas were established to protect and preserve the only living coral reef in the continental United States. Named for the late Miami newspaper editor John D. Pennekamp, who was also instrumental in preserving the land that would become the Everglades National Park, Coral Reef State Park now enjoys over a million visitors per year from around the world.

Excellent shot, Michal! I love the contrast here. Exposure is just right in spite of really tricky metering: very bright subject relatively small to the very dark backround area. Excellent feather detail and good composition (well, I guess it couldn't have possibly been composed any other way, you couldn't really move much, could you?).

Mam nadzieje, ze dzieki twojej pracy poznamy to miejsce od bardziej TN strony :-) Ptak wyszedl swietnie - naturalne, ciemne obramowanie, perfekcyjna ostrosc i szczegoly. Patrzac na ten portret chyba nikt nie ma watpliwosci, ze ptaki pochodza od dinozaurow :-)

Hi Michal!

This is a very nice picture. Excellent sharpness. Splendid lighting with perfect exposure. I love the undefined foliage in FG and the sideways POV, it gives that impression of "papparzzi" photography where the bird didn't notice your presence. We often say that subject shouldn't be centered, but in this case it's an excellente decision, I wouldn't place it anywhere else.

Great shot that deserve to be hang on a wall, and TFS.

To jest super zdjecie! Te wszystkie liscie na pierwszym planie daja bardzo fajny efekt. Swietna ekspozycja i detale. Bardzo mi sie podoba!
Nie moge sie doczekac nowych fotek z Everglades. Zawsze mnie te bagna fascynowaly!

Hi Michal, I like this as it is clear of the elegant bird's head and face. The leaf in fron gives it some intrigue. Good colours and sharpness. TFS. Murray.
