Grey Crowned Crane

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Gruiformes
Family: Gruidae
Genus: Balearica
Species: B. regulorum
Binomial name
Balearica regulorum
Bennett, 1834

The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) is a bird in the crane family Gruidae. It occurs in dry savannah in Africa south of the Sahara, although it nests in somewhat wetter habitats.

There are two subspecies. The East African B. r. gibbericeps (Crested Crane) occurs from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo through Uganda and Kenya to eastern South Africa. It has a larger area of bare red facial skin above the white patch than the nominate B. r. regulorum (South African Crowned Crane) which breeds from Angola south to South Africa.

This species and the closely related Black Crowned Crane are the only cranes that can roost in trees, because of a long hind toe that can grasp branches. This habit, amongst other things, is a reason why the relatively small Balearica cranes are believed to closely resemble the ancestral members of the Gruidae.

Hi Andrea,
I've never seen one of these before, what an amazing looking bird. Great shot, good detail and colours, DOF is perfect. A little noise in the background but not too noticeable. Great work!

Adrian

Great guy... Sooo well captured!
It is a wonderful pose, and the colours are simply awesome...
The darker background behind the head really makes it stand out, well done!

Hi Andrea
Excellent colourful capture of this lovely bird.
The vertical composition shows the crane very well, the colours are stunning, the dark BG enhanced the head beautifully (unfortunately the forehead disappeared a little due to the colour match - not your fault), and the exposure was well managed.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Andrea
Your picture's colours is always beautiful.
Well done.

Beautiful bird, Andrea. What I like the most about it is the fact that thanks to the right POV you managed to capture the light head of the bird against the darker portion of the background making the crown to stand out. Regards,
Mark

Andrea,
Interesting pic. I was just visiting your gallery while I got your critique on my Crane.
I was studying 'your 500 mm lens photos in Etosha';-).
So another wildlife shot ...from Kibale.
It is scanned one I suppose. No much experience with that myself. Time;-)!
Bu you will probably admit there is a bit noise in BG.
Nevertheless nice pic and well done
TFS
Annick
