Green pigments can be met very rarely at butterflies. This is surprising, as green does provide a very good camouflage between leaves – as can be seen here.

For apparent reasons of camouflage, many Whites show subdued green colours on the underside of their wings – e.g. the Green Veined White (Pieris napi), or the Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines). Their kind of green is an imitation achieved by a mixture of yellow and black scales that looks greenish to the eyes of possible predators, humans included.

The much brighter iridescent green colours on the underside of wings of the Green Hairstreak do not seem to be caused by pigments that are absorbing parts of the spectre, however. They look as if caused by structure scales that are reflecting light selectively by wavelength – similar to the kind of scales that are responsible for the blue iridescence on the upperside of wings of many Blues (Lycaenids), and on the wings of Morpho butterflies.

The pretty species of Green Hairstreak is common and widespread all over Europe, northwestern Africa, temperate Asia to the Pacific coast. There are closely related species in the western parts of North America. In Europe, the species can be met in Andalusia, Sicily, Greece as well as in Northern Scandinavia. Not reported from the northern parts of the British Islands, and not reported from Creta. Butterflies can be met from the seaside up to the mountains at 2000 meters above sea level. In the southern range there are two generations, one from March to June, the other one from July to the end of August. In the north and higher up there is one generation from April/May to July.

Caterpillars accept a variety of feeding plants: Genista, Cytisus, Rubus, Vaccinium, Ledum palustre.

Hallo Peter, im grünen Kontext wirkt rubi natürlich unauffällig. Einmal entdeckt, beeindrucken die Feinheiten dieses grünen Bläulings dann trotzdem. Klares farbliches Highlight ist die Spitze des rechten Fühlers. Gut gefunden ... und für gut befunden.

This green butterfly -though camouflaged- look very nice framed by a such uniform background. Perfect focus on butterfly and the very good use of DOF transmits a rare and beautiful enviroment. Light and composition are perfect. Well done!

Imitation for concealment comes out strongly in some of the species, but not this one. It has a lovely give-away fringe on the wingtips which makes it stand out against the green BG.
Lovely image with a superb POV, DOF and sharpness of details.
The note is very detailed and immensely helpful.

Glückwunsch Peter - wieder einmal ein Exemplar das ziemlich selten anzutreffen ist. Der deutsche Name ist aber total falsch gewählt. Lt. Kosmosnaturführer hat dieser Falter mit Brombeeren nichts am Hut. Seltsam finde ich, daß dieser Falter von Mutter Natur mit der grünen Farbe ausgestattet wurde. Normalerweise habe fast alle Falter regelrechte Signalfarben. Dieser kann sich mit seinen grünen Tragflächen sehr gut verstecken. - Sehr guter Bildaufbau, schöne natürliche Farben, gute Schärfe, keine bunte aber eine klare, sachliche Presentation. Danke.

Hallo Peter,
ich hatte wenig Zeit in den letzten Wochen, gelobe jetzt aber Besserung, habe TN schon ein wenig vermißt. Dieser Falter ist sehr schön, das ganze grüne Arrangement ist toll, man kann gar nicht glauben dass es bei grün so viele Nuancen und Kontraste geben kann. Und auch hier die süßen Zebra-Fühler, keiner kann mir erzählen, warum so viele Schmetterling diese gestreiften Fühler haben ;-)
Am süßesten ist aber der Name - Brombeer-Zipfelfalter, haha, wer hat sich den ausgedacht?

Hallo Peter,
Bei Deinen "älteren" Bilder gibt es Juwelen. Dies Grün in Grün gefällt mir sehr. Ich habe den Zipfelfalter im Frühling auch gesehen, aber eben das Bild ist nicht sehr gut. Vor einer Woche habe ich ein Weissfleckwidderchen gesehen, das ich dank Deinem Bild auf TN identifizieren konnte.
Wünsche eine schöne Euro-Zeit ;-)
