Leucospermum species

It belongs to the "Fynbos". Fynbos means fine bush in Afrikaans and describes the fine- or small-leaved shrublands of south-western South Africa. More explicitly, fynbos refers to evergreen, hard-leaved plants that grow in poor soil.

Fynbos forms a large part of the Cape Floral Region. The dominant fynbos families are the Restio (reeds), Erica and Protea families. These flowers belongs to the later.

Fynbos is a diverse vegetation that includes several different sub-types. It occurs in several narrow bands around the south-western tip of Africa. It breaks up into scattered chains to as far north as Malawi. These discontinuous patches are known as Afromontane fynbos.

Wherever fynbos is found, it always grows in acidic (ph4,4 or less), coarse-grained soils that are poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen. It rarely occurs where the annual rainfall exceedes 400mm pa.

What makes it so special?
It consitutes 70% of the 9000 species of flowering plants in the Cape Floral Region. It has one of the highest levels of endemism (restricted to an area) in the world. This means that the majority of these plants are found nowhere else on earth!

I will update the fynbos series later when I have time. Hope you like it.

Hi Gerhard
Wow, what a lovely 'protea' you have captured here and presented in magnificent fashion. The impact and the beauty of this “Heart of Fire” is guaranteed to touch the heart of everyone who sees it.
The POV of this vertical composition is a splendid compliment to the flower and I like how the plant leans into the photo from the bottom right hand corner to deliver its treasure on the 2/3 horizontal axis. The colours are absolutely stunning, the DOF rendered amazing sharp details, the BG is superb and it enhances the flower spectacularly, and the exposure/lighting was perfectly managed.
Very well done my friend and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Excellent composition and framing.

Wonderful detail Gerhard. The colour is pretty awesome too. A really great photo. Janice

Hi Gerhard,
Perfect isolation of this beautiful plant. The quality of light is superb! You have captured every bit of color and detail in this unique plant. Print it, matte it, frame it, and hang this one up!
Scott

This photo looks so clear and sharp I think I can reach out an touch it, pick it right off the computer screen. Wow..I'm very impressed, color and lighting is perfect. How wonderful Gerhard, excellent work.

Gerhard, these Leucospermum are always so beautiful and I've always wanted one of these plants. They grow well by the coast too but we have more than 400ml a year - oh well!!
Super capture of the flower, the colours and lighting are superb. It is a very good composition too, well done,
Janice

Hi Gerhard,
this is a beautiful flower from Fynbos, I wish I could visit Fynbos in the real life but that will only be a dream.
The DOF and details are very good, the shallow DOF helps the flower to standout nicely from the BG. Well composed and good POV.
Excellent work, my friend.

what incredible shot!
hi Mario

Hi Gerhard,
fascinating endemite plant, marvellous presentation.
The spotlights on the many petals create an amazingly three dimensional impression, and a beautiful distant dark background of unsaturated red hues adds a pleasantly soft and noble appearance to the image.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

I like this Gerhard.
It reminds me a word: aspiration.
Many little flames candidates to grow.
A photo which helps me to grow. Sometimes my heart becomes a Pincushion.
Thanks.
Can an iSangoma cures himself? No need to answer my friend, I know he cant. He needs another iSangoma better than him.
I will stay in touch until I die and still longer if I discover how.

Hello again,
This is great too. I love the colours of the plant and it's shape, especially the red "wires". The brown BG looks lovely and the quality is perfect.
VERY WELL DONE!
