Puma concolor (Linnaeus, 1771).

Description:
• Length: 1,5 to 2,7 m including the tail: 55 to 90 cm
• Height: 60 to 75 cm
• Weight: 35 to 105 kg
• Coulour: Plain, from gray to red brown. The muzzle, the back of the ears and the end of the tail are darker. Body underside white. The youngs are mottled.
• Characteristics: Relatively small round head, retractile claws.

Distribution:
Whole american continent, from Canada to Peru.

Habitat:
Temperate forests, Subtropical or tropical dry forests, Savanna, Temperate desert. From sea level to 4 500 m high.

Habits:
The Puma doesn't have permanent den and shelters in caves, under rocks or in the dense vegetation.
Each one has a vast territory (However, the female's is smaller than the males, from 15 to 50 km2 against 60 km2).
It is a lonely animal which only tolerates a congener during reproduction period.

Feedinq:
The Puma hunts by approaching silently, and can run up to 80 km/h to conclude. It eats essentially cervidaes, but smaller mammals and birds too. In forest, it often hunts in the trees. It kills its preys by biting to the nape of the neck.

Reproduction :
• Sexual maturity: 24 to 36 months (the females are mature more quickly)
• Coupling: All the year
• Gestation: 90-97 days
• Numbers of youngs by litter: 2 to 6
The coupling takes place after a short love race.

Conservation Status:
Registered on the IUCN red list as "Near threatened".
The Puma suffers from persecution because considered as a threat for the livestock, and from destruction of its natural habitat.
