Grey Wolf
Canis Lupus
Loup Gris

The largest wild canid. Fur is thick and usually grey, but can vary from nearly pure white, red, or brown to black. Head-and-body length: 100- 150 cm. Tail length: 31-51 cm. Shoulder height: 66-81 cm. Weight: 16-60 kg, males heavier than females.

Time of mating: January-April. Gestation: 6 1 63 days. Litter size: 1-1 1, mean 6. Duration of lactation: 8-10 weeks. Age at sexual maturity: 22-46 months (Mech, pers. comm.), occasionally 10 months. Longevity: up to 13 years in the wild (Mech 1988), 16 years in captivity.

Social Behavior
A pack-living animal with a complex social organization. Packs are primarily family groups. The dominant pair breeds, with sub-dominant females under behaviourally induced reproductive suppression (Packard et al. 1985). Packs include up to 30 individuals, but smaller sizes (8-12) are more common. An excellent review of wolf social behaviour and ecology can be found in Mech (1970).

Extremely variable, but the majority of the diet is large ungulates (moose, caribou, deer). Grey wolves will also eat smaller prey items, livestock, carrion, and garbage.

The wolf originally was the world's most widely distributed mammal, living throughout the northern hemisphere north of 15° N latitude. Present distributions are much restricted.

Extremely variable, densities being highest where prey biomass is highest.

Picture taken in Parc Omega where they live in captivity but in large fenced territories. Visitors stay in the car, except for the grey wolf area where we walk on a wooden protected trail.

Rene, excelent capture of the wolf. Comin' right at us. You took the shot and then climbed high in a tree. :) :)
A little tight on the frame. The feet are cut off.
Well done anyhow.

Oh lala!

Really superb technically - sharp, and well composed - with the beautiful set of colors. Shows the wolf extrelmely well.

Great shot René.
Very good compostion and details.
Little tight , the feet are cut out.
Very well done.
Happy New Year

Gorgeous composition and DOF. There is a 3D feel to the photo that not only the DOF enhances, but the suspended motion of the wolf itself. Beautifully done.

Look at his face - he isn't puppy dog, he is king of forest. Top-class quality and great moment.

Excellent DOF, composition and POV. I've noticed that carnivores seem to appear much more ominous when viewed from the perspective of potential prey.

The sharpness, dof, color and exposure are all perfect. The only nit is that he lost some toes. This is truly a stunning image.

Very well done and thanks for posting. May you and your family have a wonderful and prosperous new year.

Very intense scenario Rene. Fantastic sharpness and details in the fur. The background colours contributes perfectly and I really love the composition. Well done.

Another fantastic shot Rene, the detail, DOF and POV are superb. there is nothing to critique.

Excelent capture of the wolf. Excellent DOF, composition. Well done.

Ça y est.... je ne respire plus... Trop hot. J'adore cette photo. L'expression du sujet est génial, le cadrage et la mise au point aussi. Je n'en reviens tous simplement pas. Je crois que cette photo aurait du potentiel pour un concours photo.

Rene, how could you get rid rid of noise by using ISO 400?

Amazing shot. Everything here seems to me just perfect: composition, POV, sharpness and DOF, not to mention the very useful note. Besides, the wolf is very, very beautiful.

Absolutely superb head on picture. Focus, composition are excellent, as is the note.

Outstanding, this photo is perfection in its purest form !

What a great shot! I especially love the sharpness of the image of the wolf; you can litteraly see every hair of his furcoat. And that intense look in his eyes! It is as if he's seen you and he is coming to get you. You better run my friend! :) Very good composition. I like the way the wolf is in the right of the frame. I am coming over to Canada in September 2005 (albeit to the West-coast instead of the East-coast where you shot this wolf) and I am hoping to shoot at least such a marvelous pic like this one. Well done. One slight point: I would have liked to see his paws in the frame.

Great picture!

I have questions for you:

How do you react at full moon?
Is your skin hitching?
Do your hairs, your nails and your teeths grow?
Do you get a taste for blood?

I'm amaze you didn't get bit. It's a marvelous picture. Sharp focus, excellent DOF, great composition. Best of all its expression in its face. If it was my picture, I would have made it just slightly darker, but it could also be the discrepancy between your monitor and mine.
How do you make the elevated picture effect with its shadow?
10/5 TFS
