The Satin Wave

It was on a walk through the shadowy humid forest along the remote and peaceful southern shores of Lake Millstatt, Carinthia, when I noticed that very fragile looking white moth sitting on a leaf near the side of my path, half covered with herbs.

Wingspan: 22 – 25mm

Family: Geometridae

Ireland, UK, Southwestern, Central, and South Eastern Europe. Humid forests.

Caterpillars feed on Polygonum, Taraxacum, Stellaria.

There is a great variety of similar looking moths. It took me a while to find possible identification from a number of small and very pleasantly looking beauties with very fine markings and subtle colours.

Hi Peter,
What a beautiful little Moth. Wonderful markings and lovely soft colours. A great shot in what sounds like poor light, excellent exposure, great details and colours. Nice DOF to keep the leaves in perfect focus. Great shot, interesting and thorough note. Great work!

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
Very difficult shot [in my opinion] but you managed it very well, with excellent colour and DOF. I find the leaf on the RHS a little distracting, even because it appears to be sharper than the subject. Again it's just an opinion; minor things, otherwise the shot is splendid.

Well done making this shot. It's difficult to avoid overexposure but you manage it well. Well done and thanks.

Well don,e on this one. The uneven exposure is slightly disturbing, but it(s much better than to have overexposure. Sharp details and a good-looking picture even for the non-lepidopterist !

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter,
Lovely moth. Delicate color and file texture. The silhouette is very beautiful and the contrast with the green leaves is very pleasant!
Lovely Peter! Best regards,
José M.
