Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus)

While staying at Lower Sabie in the Kruger National Park, I was out early one morning. It was fairly quiet on our drive to Crocodile Bridge. When I finally decided to turn off the Main Road and scan the grass for Cheetah that had been seen in the area over the previous 3 days, when I came across this Bateleur on a very clear and bright morning....

Some information on the Bateleur:-

MEASUREMENTS: The Bateleur is 24 inches long, has a wingspan of 5 1/2 - 6 feet, and weighs 4 - 6 1/2 pounds. Bateleurs have very short tails and long wings.

HABITAT: Bateleurs inhabit open woodlands and tree savannas of Africa south of the Sahara Desert.

DIET: The Bateleur will eat a variety of reptiles, mammals, and small birds, but the bulk of the Bateleur’s diet is carrion. They hunt using low sweeping flights about 150 feet off the ground, then spiral down onto their prey.

REPRODUCTION: Bateleurs build large stick nests in trees or on top of nests built by other birds. The female lays 1 egg that is incubated for 52 - 59 days. The young bird fledges in 3 - 4 months, but may spend up to 4 more months with the parents. Bateleurs develop their adult plumage at about 5 - 6 years of age.

NAME DERIVATION: The scientific name comes from either the Greek word teras, meaning a meteor, or teratos, which is a marvel; opos is Greek for appearance; and the Latin word ecaudatus means to lack a tail and refers to the bird’s short tail. The common name comes from the French word bateleur and means acrobat or tightrope-walker. This word appropriately describes the spectacular aerial displays of this bird. It is also known as a Bateleur Eagle.

INTERESTING FACTS:
The Bateleur’s feet and facial color can vary from a pale color to brilliant red depending on the mood of the bird.

Most juvenile eagles have longer tail and wing feathers than their parents. When the young Bateleur is first learning to fly, it needs the longer feathers for added lift and stability. Each year the feathers that grow in are shorter, until the bird reaches maturity, when it has the normal shorter wing and tail feathers of an adult.

Hi Sheriff, you show us a big and pretty bird here. I love his pose there on the branch, making him look quite solid. Good composition and details, thank you,
Janice

It's good to see a wild one! Colours and lighting are good, though from a technical point of view the image is just slightly over sharpened, hence the slight halo along the birds back.

Hello Sheriff,

I've enjoyed the notes. Some intersting bird to watch. Love the contrast you've portray with the colours ... Great detail of the Bateleur and the old branch .... It gives some character to this master piece .....
Well done .... Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment on TN .... Zaan

Hi Sheriff,
WOW! I think this is excellent! Beautiful saturated colors and tack sharp detail. I love the composition and clear blue sky backround. I might be tempted to clone out the piece of branch along the bottom of the frame as it pulls your eyes away from the center. Great camera work here.

Hello Sheriff,

Excellent picture of this colorful Bateleur! You managed the exposition very well for we can well see the different tones of black of his feathers. You got a great pov and did an excellent composition by letting room to the right of the bird (maybe a little bit too much (1/4 inch) in order to remove what is not a branch). Great position of the bird. TFS!

Brilliant shot!
Such a hardcore bird on that hardcore(hardekool) tree just makes this foto so full of African flavours...

Hi Sheriff,

What a nice shot. Superb colours and ambiance.
As you told me, according to the facial colours the eagle on your picture is older than the one on mine. There's a big difference.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Sheriff

Wow, what a bonus you scored with this one. As it is they are normally scarce and to get one this close with the early morning light and the clear blue sky playing along is just fantastic. It went straight to my favourites. I shot a couple of these in the Kruger as well, but nothing as spectacular as this.

I really like the composition and POV with the branch reaching into the frame to deliver its precious gift. Maybe you just should have considered loosing that small piece of tree at the bottom though, but it is no big deal. The colours are really great – well saturated and stunning. The details are well defined and it shows the lovely design of this majestic eagle most effectively. And of course who would argue that the exposure was anything less than perfect.

Very well done and TFS.
