Taken on a recent trip to the Farne Islands with Aido.

Puffin
Fratercula arctica
AKA: Atlantic puffin

An unmistakable bird with its black back and white underparts, and distinctive black head with large pale cheeks and a tall, flattened, brightly-coloured bill. Its comical appearance is heightened by its red and black eye-markings and bright orange legs. Used as a symbol for books and other items, this clown among seabirds is one of the world's favourite birds. With half of the UK population at only a few sites it is an Amber List species.

Where does it live?
Breeding:
They prefer offshore islands and high seacliffs, and breed colonially, with nests in burrows, under boulders or in cracks in cliffs where predators cannot easily reach them.
Wintering:
At sea

Where to see it:
Best looked for at a breeding colony. Try the RSPB's Bempton Cliffs (N Yorks) and South Stack (Anglesey) reserves; the Farne Islands (Northumberland); the Isle of May (off the Fife coast); and the Shetland and Orkney Islands.

What does it eat?
Fish, especially sandeels

What does it sound like?
A growling laugh

When to see it:
Adults arrive back at the breeding colony in March and April and leave again in mid-August. Some remain in the North Sea at winter, other move further south to the Bay of Biscay.

Hi Mark, nice picture of this amazing fisher!
I can see it has more than 10 fishes in the mouths.
Good colors and composition for one my fovourite birds.

Hi Mark,
I've got one almost identical to this :-) Great shot, perfect DOF, great detail and colour. Perfect side profile and good framing/composition too, it's not always easy to get a side on shot like this as quite often they lean forward which makes it hard to frame the shot.

Also I noticed that the colour on Canons seems to be quite a bit different to Nikon, your oranges are far more red than mine. I've noticed that before.

Just heard from WHF, my booking is confirmed for July 22.

Excellent poster like image of this puffin. I hope to see one in real life one day. Do you have any pictures that give a clue to the small scale of this bird?

The pose is perfect in this image and the blue fish add a point of interest and balance the colours against the orange. Great work.

Hi Mark, I think your shot of Puffins is terrific. I hope one day to get the chance to shoot them and I'd be happy to get a result like this. The exposure is great, it's sharp and you caught it with a beak full of fish too. That BG is great and it is well composed. Very nicely done :)

I finally saw my first live puffin (other than distant blobs flying close to the water) whilst on holiday and this picture of yours reminded me of them.

he seems to have a very dirty face compared to the rest of his body!

Everything is spot on, so can't really same much about the shot....
