Carduelis Flammea, The common Redpoll.
Smaller then a sparrow, pale, brown streaked with a bright red cap and black chin. The male has a pink breast.
Voice; -in flight, a rattling chet-chet-chet-chet, song a trill.
Habitat; -Tundra and Dwarf artic birch in summer, brushy pastures, open thickets and weedy fields in winter.
Nesting; -4-6 pale green eggs, spotted with redbrown in well made up cup of grass, moss placed in a low Willow or Birch.
Range; -Aleutians west to Unalaska Island and Alaska, Northern Quebec south to Newfoundland, Magdalen Islands, British Columbia.
Winters south to the Carolinas, Oklahoma and California, also in Northern Eurasia.
Info; Audubon Society field guide.

These are commonly found on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada at backyard feeding stations throughout winter and are gone in Spring.
I was glad to see them come to the feeding station set up near the house. There were about 30 feeding with Black capped Chickadees.
The best bird feed is the "Black Oil" sunflower seed as it is easier for the birds to crack which takes less energy. The black oil sunflower seed is smaller then the stripped and slightly larger then the Nyger seed.

Taken with the S5000 hand held at about 3 feet away through a double sealed window with no flash.
ISO 200
F 3.2
Focal length 55mm
In photoshop Elements cropped and added 3 frames using the colors of the bird and ran it through neat image to rid of noise.

Great shot Mike.
This a typical winter bird in Sweden too, you don't see them in the summer.
Very good details, composition and colours.
Great work.

I admire you who can take this great pictures of small birds with a compact digi, I tried today but with no success.

Un oiseau difficile ŕ photografier pour sa couleur rouge flamboyante au front et diffuse, sur la poitrine.Un petit oiseau peut farouche. J'aimerais savoir la balance des blanc utilisé. Bonne journée

Very good shot Mike,
I like it so much because the good colours and the sharpnes, important on this photo is the little tine, that tine in front of the bird is sharp and the bird is sharp, mostley people get then a dof. very good dof here and a good note, great job

Geez Mike, this is well done. What a neat bird- I can't ever remember seeing one. (No wonder, they aren't found in my neck-of-the-woods.) Excellent photo.
Your notes are a step beyond also, well done on all fronts.

great picture Mike!
The only thing is really bad is the pink frame, it takes the red color of the bird and... takes the eye focus of the bird and on to the frame!
But if you ignore it you see that the picture is excellent!

Good picture Mike. I haven't seen this bird before. It looks like a pretty coloured sparrow. Good composition and colours. TFS.

Why is it always the small birdies that have the biggest mouths/ I can "hear" this guy calling from your discription!
I also like the way the frame echos the colours - I love framing - used to buit a lot of jig-saw puzzles, and layering the frames complimentsthe overall image often very well, like here.
Good image, and go for the D20, and let us have more!

Almost frozen bird! I like contrast between white frost and red bird. Excellent quality.

Now, this may be a common bird, but it's uncommonly pretty ;-))
Good POV, great colours, a few hints of overexposure on the whites, but nothing to detract from the photo.

Mike, this is better than any of my bird shots with the S5000. I must go and try the raw setting. I assume you were using a tripod or something to rest the camera for 1/25 sec.
Apart from that the composition, DoF and POV are very nice and the rose colour of the bird is well reproduced.

Mike, this is excellent... colours are beautiful, framing works well, sharpness is incredible... TFS.

It is a very intersting specimen, Mike. Lovely soft colours. The red just adding some warmth to the cold landscape. Sharp details and a nice compo. Well done.

Hi Mike

This is a fine looking bird. What wonderful colours. The plumage detail captured is very clear, great detail. Is that snow/ice on the branch. Great note too. Capturing this through a window was no easy task. Good skills. 10 out of 10.

This is a fine portrait of a redpoll. Detail is great and DOF is as well. My only nits with it is the twig vertical to the Redpoll and the underbellie of the bird looks like the highlights are blown on my monitor, bit otherwise a super capture.

Mike, very beautiful photo. An artistic one. Here, everything is perfect: DOF, POV, sharpness, colors, BG, composition and note.

I can't say enough good things about this photo, his feathers are so clear and sharp. The frame colors accent it perfectly, and the the name at the bottom. The branch seems the perfectly balanced perch, and his eye peeking around it, just enough. The colors are nice as is the blurry background! Whew!!!
My fingers are tired now! ;=)
Excellent photo!
