[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the first butterfly that I have been able to shot this year and I think that it looks good.

The shot was done in RAW and I have used ACDSee Pro. X to process the file and converted to jpg. The same program was used to adjust levels, color, sharpness and finally, crop and resized to the posting size.

Eastern Black Swallowtail (Papilo polyxenes)

Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies, which form the family Papilionidae. There are at least 600 species, and though the majorities are tropical, members of the family are found on all continents except Antarctica.

Swallowtail butterflies have two "tails" near their rear, a feature seen by bird predators as "antennae." In addition, in some species, the brilliant red spots in iridescent blue are mistaken as "eye spots." In other words, it looks like the hind end of the butterfly is the head end. Often birds go after this "tail end", and the butterfly flies away with the bird holding a "tail" in its beak. The butterfly may have lost the back part of its wing, but it is still alive! When you are watching swallowtail butterflies, notice that some swallowtails have missing tails!

Swallowtails are usually classified into three subfamilies, Baroniinae, Parnassiinae and Papilioninae, the latter two being further divided into tribes. An additional subfamily Praepapilioninae, has a single extinct member, known only from a single fossil. The Eastern Black Swallowtail is a common swallowtail butterfly, often confused with the Pipevine Swallowtail or female Tiger Swallowtail. The family includes the largest butterflies in the world, the birdwing butterflies of Australasia (genus Troides).

Swallowtails differ from all other butterflies in a number of anatomical traits. Most notably, their caterpillars possess a unique organ behind their heads, called the osmeterium. Normally hidden, this forked structure can be averted when the caterpillar is threatened, and used to emit a foul-smelling secretion containing terpenes.

The male has a yellow band on the hind wings with a blue cloud under it. The female has a row of yellow dots above a blue band. It's easiest to remember that males have more yellow, and females have more blue.

The main host plant for this butterfly in the wild is Queen Anne's Lace, but they also eat garden plants in the carrot family, including carrots, parsley, dill, and fennel.

Both male and female Eastern Black Swallowtails are bluish-black with yellow spots on the wings. They also have two orange eyespots with black dots in the middle.

Hi Jorge
You think its looks good? Well, I think it looks remarkably, exceptionally stunning. You sure nailed this one on the button and to think you had no practice yet this year (chuckle). Congratulations my friend as your first one is also your best one so far (ha-ha-ha). ;o)
The composition is fine while the colours are splendid, the details are brilliant as everything is perfectly in focus apart from the very tip of the right wing, the BG is absolutely great and it compliments the dark butterfly, and the exposure was spot-on.
Very well done my friend and TFS.

Hola Jorge,
