Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon)

Finally I can show you the beauty in all its splendor. I took the picture in the late evening on a hilltop near Brasov Romania. And YES! The butterfly IS hanging on the grass stem, I didn't paste it over a blurred BG although it may look so. Unfortunately it only stood in this position for a few seconds and I didn't get another chance to try a different framing. But I was happy to get this shot since this species is very rare around here.
For more info on this species please feel free to view my other swallowtail pictures "Profile of beauty" and "Jewel in the grass".

Nice colours and very good background, it looks like the butterfly is in the air because of the little grass stem.

You manage well the 30D make great pictures of Papilio machaon. Here he is superb with its wings well open. Sharpness, DOF, BG are excellent. Bravo Eduard !!!

Très belle image de ce machaon qui déploie toute sa beauté. La similitude avec ma photo est importante...seul le fond change.
Amicalement

Hello Eddie!
Maybe this photo is not perfect in every respect, but it is rare to see for two reasons. First, most of the butterfly shots show them with the wings closed. And out of those that show the wings open not too many create the impression of the insect being in flight and not sitting on some kind of support. Congratulations,
Mark

hi eduard
superbe couleurs.good POV and DOF.pas de bruit .
bravo.

Feeel as though it were actually floating 2" outward from my screen. Excellent capture Eduard. :)

Great shot!
I love the sharp distinction between the subject and background.
The colors and details are amazing.
I would have loved if the grass stem would be even more blurred so as the butterfly seemed to be in the air.
A definite favourite!

Πολύ ωραία. Φαίνεται σαν να στέκετε στον αέρα.. Μπράβο!

Hi Eddie,

just discovered this pretty image of a resting swallowtail on TN's frontpage. The presentation with the swallowtail hovering seemingly without any gravitity looks very good. Composition is fine, details are fine, colours are brilliant, the isolation from the background is excellent.

As with most cases of downsize to web, also at this image a postwork resharpening is to be recommended to show all its precision. Swallowtails are a bit difficult to be treated that way as the spreckled parts of wings tend to look oversharpened at once and therefore usually have to be excluded that kind of resharpening procedure.

The bright parts of wings often tend to get slightly overexposed, same as here. This may easily be treated by postprocessing as long as enough information is still contained in slightly overexposed parts.

Tried a little workshop to give this pretty image a well deserved finish.

Thank you! My best regards,

Peter
