During winter there is not a lot of birds available for photography and even less colourful ones. This morning’s visit to the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, however paid off with this beautiful Longclaw. With perfect light from behind I am able to share this picture with you. I hope you enjoy.

The Cape Longclaw (Macronyx capensis) is a passerine bird in the longclaw family Motacillidae, which also includes the pipits and wagtails. In Southern Africa it is more commonly known as an Orange-throated Longclaw. It is a 19-20cm long, cryptically colored African grassland bird. Usually found in pairs year round and is easily recognised by a bright orange gorget (both sexes).

Its voice is a loud catlike meew alarm call, given in flight or from ground or perch; piping 2-syllabled deewit, deewit (sometimes calls in duet, deewit, meew; deewit, meew; often preceded by staccato choichoichoik), usually in flight; mellow high-pitched far-carrying whistled tweeee song and/or contact call.

This species is a common resident and has a large range, with an estimated global extent of occurrence of 820,000 km². It is common in moist short grassland, vleis, seasonally flooded grassland; usually without trees where its food is insects and grass seed. The global population size has not been quantified, but it is believed to be large as the species is described as 'frequent' in at least parts of its range. The species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

What stunning colors!
You captured this with the perfect light and with sharp details.
Very sharp details.
I cannot get over that orange throat, accentuated by the black border.
Thank you for sharing this bird rarely, if ever, seen on TN. : )

amazing shot

Hi Anton,

What a nice and colorful bird that I didn’t know about. The image is sharp and clean and I like the sober BG that gives contrast to the bird! TFS,

Hi ANton,
Stunning. Lovely framing and that BG is just silky smooth. Good use of DOF on this very photogenic subject. You have a wonderful set of images in your portfolio. I'd love to have that 200-400mm lens. How do you find the AF performance?

Hi Anton,
Browsing your portfolio I have to say that you make great nature pictures.
Congrats for that..
