Aporia crataegi.

The Oetztal Valley.

With vast areas of almost inaccessible and uncultivated primary areas, the Alpine mountains are a rich and very diverse biosphere of plants and animals that have become rare in many other parts of Europe.

The butterfly:

Aporia crataegi (Linnaeus, 1758)
Black Veined White
Groot geadert witje
Sortaret hvidvinge
Niestrzęp głogowiec
Mlynárik ovocný
Bělásek ovocný

Pieride del biancospine
Blanca del Majuelo
Le Gazé

Family: Pieridae (Whites)

Wingspan: 60 - 75mm.

The Black Veined White, once reported to have been a common butterfly of open areas and gardens, has become extinct or very rare in most parts of Europe due to "modern" methods of applying pesticides all over the place. Distributed from Northern Africa and Europe up to 62° north through temperate Asia to Korea and Japan, the species is missing on the Atlantic Isles, on Corsica and Sardinia, and it has become extinct in the UK.

Caterpillars feeding on Crataegus, Prunus, and other fruit trees, for which the species was pursued as a pest during the last centuries.

In Alpine meadows between forests, the elegant butterfly with its shiningly white transparent wings can still be found in good numbers from lower elevations up to 2000m above sea level.

The plant:

Carduus personata (L.) Jacq.
Synonyms/other Latin names: Arctium personata L., Cirsium arctioides Vill., Cirsium lappaceum Lam.
Common name(s): Great marshthistle,
Bergdistel, Klettendistel, Chardon.

A commom plant on mountain meadows from the lowlands up to about 2000m above sea level. Its blossoms offer a welcome source of nectar to butterflies and other insects. Its bulky flower heads sometimes are crowded with nectar lovers.

The location:

Hemerach, a steep meadow with plenty of flowers at an elevation of 1500m, a one hour's walk from Gries im Sulztal, overlooking the village of Längenfeld and the Oetztal valley.

The camera:

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 6mm, f/4, 1/500 sec., ISO 125; 10.07.2006, 17:12.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, cropped to the left, slightly sharpened, downsized to the web.

Hope you enjoy. Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Wow, this is fantastic shot. So sharp & great colours. I like the background, perhaps just a little bit too much. However this is just my opinion. Well done

Hi Peter,
This a beautiful shot of the place you are coming from. There are not many places in the world where one still finds a rich biosphere of plants and animals. I can just imagine that the Alpine mountains are beautiful and that you must really love the place. I think you have used a very creative idea to show people the place. The butterfly and thrisle are both beautifully exposed and despite the fact that they are the main subjects in the picture your presentation leaves the imagination to run wild. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Peter,
Very great composition! I like very much the sharpness and exposition in foreground, and the mountains and valley in background.
Einfach wunderbar, Peter.

I love the back lighting on the white butterfly this is a very refreshing image of nature. Excellent capture. :)

Hi Peter,
This is a really romantic composition. I already can hear the "Alp-horn" and the "cowbells". The macro alone would have been simply excellent, and here, together with this beautiful landscape it's more than splendid ! Superb use of DOF the control every parametre.

Great composition with a lovely fluid background which gives the shot a very airy feel. The subject in the foreground is perfectly framed, sharp and interesting.

Excellent control of this difficult light, you made a great use of it. Perfect DOF and beautiful scenary.
The butterfly looks really good, I would be temptated to post a bit closer, but the landscape looks so nice... maybe in another post. This is great like this!
Regards, Felipe.

The back-lit butterfly and flower are stunning.
Absolutely gorgeous light and colors.
Fantastically sharp details and excellent POV.
Composition is wonderful, with the mountains in the BG.
You managed to showcase the subjects clearly in a good size, yet you managed to include so much BG that is informative regarding the plight of wildlife in our industrialized societies, juxtaposing the wild mountains and the plowed fields below.
Great job and TFS. : )

Hello Peter,
Nice to see you back with a wonderful post again:).I see you were in a beautiful place at vocation.Your capture is magnificent.I liked large DOF,lighting,3D effect, crisp clear details,POV,colors and composition a lot.Excellent work!
Have a great day too...

The valley, though blurred in the BG, still lends a different character to this great macro of the butterfly, Peter.
TFS and take care.

Hi Peter, Perhaps one of the best butterflies on TN. The mountainous backdrop beyond those transluscent wings is a pleasure forthe eyes. The thistle colour is a bonus. Well portrayed. Murray.

Hi Peter,
This shot is all about the composition. It is amazing! I think this a very creative shot. You handled the difficult exposure range very well. Beautiful colors and sharp detail in the butterfly. The OOF backround scenery looks great. 10 points for creativity!

Hi Peter.
It's really outstanding photo. I've no doubts. Superb idea and composition. Excellent macro? Yes. Beautiful Landscape? Yes. Charming flower? Yes. Inimitable in its beauty butterfly? Yes. Amazing BG. Light is incomparable. Colours are perfect, etc, etc. Bravo-o-o-o! TFS. My compliments.

Hi Peter, lovely shot. I just spent an hour outside trying to shoot b-flies in the Texas heat..Nothing as breathtaking in the BG I'm afraid..I'm not certain, but I believe a point & shoot is better at pulling in more BG like this, than a DSLR..
Excellent. The overall impact is awesome :)

Hi Peter

Can't add anymore to what has already been said. Congrats!

Hello Peter,
An excellent macro & landscape in one.
The light through the butterfly wings looks superb it highlights the patterns and detail.
You cant get much better than this in a composition, quite breathtaking!
Very well done.

Hallo Peter,
stolpere gerade noch über Deinen Baumweissling.
Frage mich nur, was mir besser gefällt.

Gran trabajo Peter.

A very beautiful composition really.
The mountain bottom, the effect of the light and a suitable election of the POV, convert this image to poetry.
Great job Peter.

Hi Peter
Fantastic shot!
great colors, composition with the Alpes in the BG, razor sharp focus...
fantastic backligth (I suppose..for the wings of the butterfly..)
easy favorite :)

Wow! Nice shot! I like the colours and the light.
I am planning to buy a new camera and I am into macro shots. Sony DSC-H5 seems to have performed a good job. Do you advise this machine?

Simply perfect. The animal, the plant, the background. What can I say more?

Hello Peter,

This is another masterpiece from you. The composition is outstanding. You created a great perspective by overlaping the subject with the mountains in the background. But the most impressive thing about this picture is the way you handled the light. The backlight and the translucence of the wings of the butterfly create such a beautiful effect which is enhanced by the sun rays that shine through the clouds above the background mountains. You exposed this situation with great skills so that we can admire the great details even if in shade. You only let us figure out and dream about the landscape in the background. Thank you for showing us this beauty! Excellent job!

With Friendly Regards,

Hello Peter,
Wow amazing photo! Great POV, beautiful color saturation. wow what a background too! Love it! TFS

Absolutely wonderful shot. Colours, composition, subject, focus! Thank you!

Wow...this is like something from a dream or fairy tale. How beautiful! Wonderful light...through the wings of the butterfly, filtering through the clouds, highlighting the valley. Gorgeous!
