The Magpie Goose (Anseranas semipalmata) is found in freshwater swamps, usually within 300 km of the northern and eastern Australian coastline. Although it once inhabited inland swamps of southern Australia, most of those populations were hunted to extinction by European settlers in late 1700s and 1800s. Draining of swamps for agriculture also contributed to the speciesí demise in the south.
In northern Australia the species is common and can occur in flock up to 80,000, those numbers decline markedly south of the Queensland Ė New South Wales border. Hunting is no longer a threat, but with large areas of freshwater wetland gone forever, itís doubtful the species will recover in the south of the country.
Magpie Geese feed on aquatic vegetation, especially the bulbs of rushes, but also seeds and grass stems. Despite an extensive literature search, I couldnít find any information on the teeth-like adaptation on the bill; presumably its an adaptation for grinding the rushes and seeds prior to swallowing, but I donít really know.
This one was taken at the Shortland Wetland Centre near Newcastle, and Iíve added a shot of the whole goose in the workshop if youíre interested.
Thanks for looking.

Hello Chris,

Fantastic close-up of this goose! You managed perfectly the exposure in order to see clearly the different black tones! Details are awesome for we can see the filtering system of the beak! The lovely blurry green bg complimets very well the goose too! Finally, the colors looks very natural! Superb shot and TFS!
