So what is a Sundog or Parhelia?

Well its like a rainbow only without the rain! You still need the sun at a certain angle, but you also need certain type of clouds and more importantly certain ice particles within those certain clouds and for these ice crystals to be at a certain angle and position to the sun. They are surprisingly common apparently! More common than rainbows.

When all of these conditions are met you may get to see one, if you are in the right place at the right time, and for the first time in my life, I was.

This picture was taken shortly after arriving at Bhalatos (Valtos) on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebridies of Scotland.

For more information about Ice Halos and sundogs please see this site, it is very informative - Sundog.Clara.co.uk.

What have I done to the picture - well very little, converted from RAW, brightening it a touch, cloned out a touch of dust from the lens and resized it, sharpened it a touch and added a frame.

Please enjoy.

Hi Emma,
Wonderful place, light, composition,... what a holiday place!
Beautiful picture! To print and to put it in the wall!
TFS, José M.

Hi Emma,
What a beauty, the colors in the clouds have such a beautiful pink color and then great bonus of the sundog. This might be a more common thing then rainbows, I've never seen one in my life. Your composition is perfect with the grass and flowers in the f/g which still have a touch of color. The islands and cloud formation on the horizon give it a great depth and I especially like the boat in this photo, because it adds another focal point into this photo.

Wow! spectacular image indeed...UK always! always have the best landscape...Brilliant!

Hi Emma, good shot of this phenomenon, I've never seen it myself although I have seen some similar things. The composition is good and is that a little boat on the rhs? If so it looks a little strange - a couple of pixies sailing! Well done.

Hi Emma,
What a great shot, lovely "sundog" sky. Thanks for the note on this.. I did not know of this phenomenon by name or explanation, but have seen it before of course. Excellent atmosphere/mood in this one..
Very well done and Thank You!
