[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Unfortunately I don't know the name of this hummer and I couldn't find it in my fieldguide ( Birds of Trinidad and Tobago) This is the photo that I took with the highest shutterspeed (1/1000). Nevertheless the lightconditions were not perfect as you can see in the background, but in this case: you can't have it all!
Did you know that, with the exception of insects, Hummingbirds while in flight have the highest metabolism of all animals, a necessity in order to support the rapid beating of their wings. Their heartbeat can reach as high as 1260 beats per minute, a rate once measured in a Blue-throated hummingbird!!!
They also typically consume more than their own weight in food each day, and do that they have to visit hundreds of flowers daily. At any givenmoment they are only hours away from starving. However, they are capable of slowing down their metabolism at night, or any other time food is not readily available. They enter a hibernation-like state known as torpor. Duting torpor, the heartrate and rate of breathing are both slowed dramatically (the heartrate to roughly 50-180 beats per minute) reducing their need of food.

Hello Zeno!
You have captured what I think is a female Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, according to my Birds of Venezuela, which is a useful supplement to Birds of Trinidad and Tobago. I was at Asa Wright 11 years ago but then I didn't have equipment to take such a good picture. Well done!
Regards, Ivan

Hi Zeno,
This is a great catch! I'm always impressed by people who manage to catch hummingbird while they are flying. I tried so many times without good results, congratulations! Good clarity and details, good lightning too and thanks for those interesting notes. TFS,
Claudine

Hi Zeno

What can I say except Wow - this is really beautiful. The BG really sets this shot off as it allows you to focus entirely on this stunning bird. Excellent composition, POV, details and colour. Lovely movement in the wings.

Hi Zeno,
This a great capture! The Lighting on the hummer is very good with nice catch light in the eye. In flight photos of hummingbirds can be very challenging and I congratulate you! Focus, exposure, POV, color are all excellent. As for background, you get what you get with a moving target. Very nice over all!
