Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta [Linnaeus])

Description:

The upperside of the red admiral butterfly is black with white spots near the wing tips. The forewing has a red band across the middle, and the hindwing has a red band along the edge. The red admirals that are born during the winter are smaller and duller, while the ones that live during the summer are larger and brighter. Their wing span is from 1 3/4 - 3 inches (4.5 - 7.6 cm).

Life history:

The red admiral has a very erratic, rapid flight. Males perch, on ridgetops if they can, in the afternoon to wait for females, who lay eggs one at a time on the tops of host plant leaves. Young caterpillars eat and live inside a shelter of folded leaves, while older caterpillars make a nest of leaves tied together with silk. Adults hibernate.

Caterpillar hosts:

Red admiral caterpillars eat plants of the nettle family (Urticaceae) including stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), tall wild nettle (U. gracilis), wood nettle (Laportea canadensis), false nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica), pellitory (Parietoria pennsylvanica), mamaki (Pipturus albidus), and possibly hops (Humulus).

Adult food:

Red admirals butterflies prefer sap flows on trees, fermenting fruit, and bird droppings. They visit flowers only when their other foods are not available. Then they will drink nectar at common milkweed, red clover, aster, and alfalfa, among others.

Habitat:

Red admiral butterflies prefer moist woods, yards, parks, marshes, seeps, and moist fields. During migrations, these butterflies are found in almost any habitat from the tundra in Canada to subtropic countries near the equator.

Range:

These butterflies can be found from Guatemala, in Central America, north through Mexico and the United States to northern Canada. They can also be found in Hawaii, some Caribbean Islands, New Zealand, Europe, Northern Africa, Asia. They cannot survive extremely cold winters. This means that most of North America must be recolonized each spring by red admiral butterflies migrating northward.

Hello Eddie,
Excellent image, you managed the harsh light very well, in fact turned it to your favour I think, there's a lot of depth to this. Great detail, rich colour and perfect DOF. The colours and light in the background work really well too, almost like a painting. Great work my friend.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Eddie!
Very well taken shot of this pretty butterfly. I like the colors of the background you got here, we don't see such tones in butterfly pictures too often. Congratulations,
Mark

Hello Eduard, this is a fine shot. Lovley composition and good colours and light. I think the wings have dropped out of the DOF a little but that's a very minor nit on a very good shot. Well done.

Hi Eddie,

Marvelous colours for this excellent shot. Congratulations.

David
