[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes), a New Zealand endemic, is one of the rarest penguins. They live and breed around the south-east coast of the South island, on Stewart island and in the sub-antarctic Auckland and Campbell islands. They are known to Maori as "Hoiho".

The population of yellow-eyed penguins is estimated to be around 5,000 breeding pairs and is centred on the sub-antarctic Auckland Islands, however around 500 pairs breed on the NZ mainland. Variable marine productivity causes considerable fluctuation in year-to-year numbers of breeding pairs, however the long-term trend is stable. The species is listed by the NZ Dept of Conservation as being "Threatened".

In 1987 Dunedin conservationists also formed the "Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust" with the aim of saving the penguin by restoring coastal forest and controlling predators.

It could have been a great portrait, but unfortunatly focus is very soft. It's also cropped too tight, but the colours are nice and soft.

Nice post. Great portrait, good colours and framing but the only problem is focus is a bit soft but nice to share all the same. Thanks
