Try as I might to increase depth of field and get a decent shot of this little guy, nothing ever really panned out. It looks to me like something out of the beetle family. Whatever field guides I have on hand don't show a precise match. Suspecting that he was probably up to no good, I ended his photoshoot by squishing him.

Hi James

it's a nymph of a masked assassin bug, Reduvius personatus (Reduviidae)

they often enter houses in search of termites or ants (don't remember which .. maybe both) - their main diet

the nymphs are actually covered with termite/ant faeces and dirt for camouflage

they will bite and inject a burning pain causing venom if handled not carefully
