English name : Puffball - Scientific name : Lycoperdon perlatum - Edible young.
Description : alone, scattered, gregariously or in clusters ; in woods under hardwoods or conifers but also common along roadsides and in urban settings ; rarely on very decayed wood. Summer and fall in temperate regions, very widely distributed and common.
Fruiting body : Shaped like an inverted pear, with a fairly prominent stem and a roundish to flattened top, 2.5-7 cm wide, 3-8 cm high, dry, covered with white spines when young and fresh. The spines often falling away by maturity and leaving scars on the surface, by maturity developing a central rupture through which spores are liberated by rain drops and wind currents, white, becoming discolored and eventually sometimes brownish ; with a white, fleshy interior at first, later with yellowish to olive granular flesh and eventually filled with brownish spore dust.
Like many other puffballs, Lycoperdon perlatum is edible when young and fresh. The flesh of young specimens is white and fairly firm. Don't eat any specimens in which the flesh has begun to turn yellow or brownish.
Photo : Slightly cropped, resized and framed in 800x600 for TN. Shotted in mountain forest at 1100m altitude.
I could take my 350D in forest because my wife went to help me and she carried the mushrooms bag ;-)
I try to take care of the composition into the small optical viewer but on the ground and with my glasses it is not easy...
I forgot to use ISO 400 or 800 to gain better speed than 1/8s...
Technique : Canon EOS 350D in mode P - White balance Auto - Auto focus - Focal length 73mm - Metering mode evaluative - Aperture f5.6 - Shutter speed 1/8s - Iso 100 - Flash not fired - File JPG fine - Support on my elbows on the ground...

Hello Cristian,
Wonderful post.I liked visual effect of limited DOF a lot.
POV,blurred BG,clear details, lighting, framing and composition are also excellent.

HI Christian,
it's beautiful, amazing to see that they have the same stomp/foot.
I also like to see the single one in the BG, a beautiful arrangement, thanks

Hi Christian,
good composition and detail with well controlled exposure, nice low perspective and good DoF, the only thing that spoils it for me is the very out of focus puffball in the background, it keeps detracting my eye from the rest of the image.

Bonjour Christian,
Très belle photo de ce champignon. On voit très bien les détails et c'est surtout la composition que j'aime. Très bien réussi.
Salutations, Francois

Hi Christian,
What I like most in this shot is the limited DOF, that isolates your subject so well in the frame mf.
An excellent composition that is perfectly exposed.
Very nice sharpness/detail..Great technique. It sounds like you had some difficulty being at ground level, and the small viewfinder to deal with..and glasses..and 1/8th..and handheld! ;)
Excellent notes on this as always,

Very well done!

Superbe cet effet de relief Christian, la composition est bonne et les couleurs trés douces. On jurerais des champignons en polystyrene!! et ils en ont même la consistances lorsqu'ils sont jeunes!! Bravo pour cette belle macro de saison, Didier.

Hi Christian
What a neat collection of golf balls, but these would probably disappear in a puff of dust if one play them.
The composition is excellent with the grouping of fungi on the right and the green peat running through the diagonal. The colours are well saturated, the details are amazingly sharp, the DOF worked very well to fade the BG completely OOF, and the exposure was spot-on with brilliant contrasts to show the lovely textures of the mushrooms.
Very good work my friend and TFS.

Hello Christian,
A beautiful composition!
The subject is well captured, and nicely integrated in a fine composition...
Wonderful details and fine natural colours, DOF spot on and your point of view works very well!

bonjour christian

Hello Christian

A lovely artistic composition of these fungi.Very good DOF on the centre one.I really like the blurred BG.A beautiful frame really makes this photo stand out.TFS

Hi Christian,
Great composition on these nice looking Puffballs. Spot on exposure has the colors looking perfect. i really like the shallow DOF here.
The gradual falloff the DOF gives it a beautiful artistic/dreamy look.
Vey nice!

Hi Christian,
Well executed macro! So these are edible? Did you give one a try? :)
You have a very good eye for fungus (sounds strange but really it's a compliment). I like the detail and composition a lot. Great OOF BG and colour. The shallow DOF works really well here.

Excellent shot.

The details in the shot are amanzing. Great composition. The shutter speed was clearly not a problem, you had the camera solid as rock.

All in all it is a great picture. Nice details, nice colours, good focus and composition.

Wow these are bizarre. A great capture, stunning detail and composition.
A superb specimen, they look like abnormal golf balls!
Great pov with the slight slope behind and the oof 'puff' in the bg.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Christian,
Great shot with nice backround and cool colours. Perfect composition!
Best greetings,

I find quite difficult to get good ids. on puffballs. There are a lot very similar and tricky.
Very nice lights and POV you got for this 5.
Hope to see more fungui from this season soon. I have a lot of new rare ones, but little time.
Thanks MF.

Hello Christian, i really love the composition here. The blurred out fungi in the background adds alot to the shot. Well done on the exposure here. Very well done.

Hi Christian
Beautiful shot of this delightful puffball.
Well composed as usual, beautiful sharpness and good exposure, the white are not OE.
Well done

Hi Christian,

Awesome details and crystal clear sharpness on the nearest fungus. Good to see it's a common specie in France, too. :) Fantastic photo, I'm amazed. Congrats and tfs. Best regards, László
