The genus Smyrna (family Nymphalidae) comprises 2 very similar species, S. blomfildia and S. karwinskii. The latter occurs in central America from Nicaragua northwards and possibly may be found in the northern parts of Costa Rica.
The picture shows Smyrna blomfildia from Costa Rica. This species occurs from Mexico through central America and south to Paraguay. Some subspecies may be distinguished; that of central America including Costa Rica is called ssp. datis Fruhstorfer.
The species can be found resting on tree trunks or on rotting fruits and occurs in Costa Rica from sea level up to 1200 m.

Male blomfildia differ in colour pattern from the females. The latter do not show the warm orange-brown colours of the upperside, instead these wing areas are dull brown.

- Forewing length: about 40 mm.

- Bright sun light (ISO 200)
- No tri-/monopod

Really wonderful capture of this beautiful bright orange/yellow butterfly. Excellent focus. I suppose the underwings are completely orange?
TFS, Ulla

Nice macro Peter, with a classic but effective POV for to show the details of this butterfly.

+ composition, POV, DOF, sharpness, focus, background, color, framing, notes.

= lighting (I believe that something less than exposure it has been convenient).

Greetings... Ricardo

RE: my 1st. BM I have publically accepted my folly.
Feel so bad. Anyway,
This is a great presentation. Plus your pov, dof, focus colours, framing, lights, bg & notes are perfect.
Best & fond greetings,

Wow, Peter. The colors on this butterfly are just brilliant.
Great POV and perfect exposure that brings out the radiance.
Sharp details.

Hi Peter

Congrats on an excellent shot. Well composed, good clear detail and nicely saturated colour. :-)

Hi Peter!
Lagged behind by a day on TN due to busy work schedule, so I am catching up with it now.
I love this very beautiful species native to Costa Rica. The colours are just divine. The image fits my notion of perfection in nature photography. I like the rich green foliage in the background in equal sharp focus.
I once again thank you for your kind guidance in identifying the butterfly I posted recently.
Warm regards.

un papillon aux couleurs magnifiques, c' est merveilleux, bone netteté, très bon travail, bravo

Hi Peter!
Beautiful butterfly shot. Well, it's always interesting to look at a picture of something that we can't see in real life. Very good POV ensuring good sharpness of the entire subject. Congratulations,
