A Mute Swan

The water was nice and clam with some nice reflections form the sky, sorry about the high POV it was a low as I could get due to a high bank.

Some Swan Notes

Mute swan (Cygnus olor)
The mute swan is a very large white waterbird. It has a long S-shaped neck, and an orange bill with black at the base of it. Flies with its neck extended and regular slow wingbeats. The population in the UK has increased recently, perhaps due to better protection of this species. The problem of lead poisoning on lowland rivers has also largely been solved by a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights. Some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe into eastern England.

Where does it live and breed?
Found in lakes with shallow areas for feeding, slow-flowing rivers, canals, nearby fields and beside salt and brackish water.

As for breeding, but also on sheltered coasts and estuaries.

Where to see it
Breeds across most of the UK, other than in northern Scotland, mid-Wales and the moors of south-west England. Possible to see anywhere there is a shallow lake, or a slow-flowing rivers, even in urban areas and parks.

What does it eat?
Water plants, insects and snails.

What does it sound like?
Mostly silent, but hisses when angry; in flight its wings make a loud throbbing ‘waou, waou....'.

When to see it
All year round

Similar species
Bewick's swan, Whooper swan

truly majestic portrait.
Perfect approach, excellent details, perfect exposure.
Exciting contrast of chilling blue all around, with the red beak in the centre. Wonderful composition.
Great! My congratulations.
Thank you, and best regards,

Excellent shot.

Well done. I like the pose you got here as well as the reflections of the water.

If you want to be picky a slightly tighter crop would be nice, but that is no biggy.

Well captured and great note

félicitations pour ce super cygne avec le reflet de l' eau c' est génial

Preciosa imagen, que refleja la serenidad del cisne y del agua en la que nada.
El color es excelente, así como la luz y el brillo.
Saludos. JL.

Delightful composition, Hilary.
I like the use of light here. It lends a very cheerful outlook to the picture.
The colours are natural and beautiful.

lovely pict........love it!!

Hi Hilary.
I have just now understood, how it is difficult to make such fine pictures. On a way to Crimea I have tried to photograph swans. But because of the bright sun I have made very poor shots. I shall study at you.

Your Swan is majestic and wonderful. The reproduction of the white and light-grey tones are perfect. Colours of the water and reflections in it are surprising. Composition is excellent as well. My congratulations and best regards.

Hi Hilary,
Nice shot! Very good sharpness, color, DOF, and you handled the exposure well. I think the central comp works well here. I like this POV from the front and the birds pose too :)
Well done & TFS!

Very good reflections on the water and great pose from the Swan. Sharp, perfectly exposed, it's a very good piece of work ! Thanks Hilary.

Hi Hilary,
Did this swan just swim right up and strike a pose for you? Looks like it did! Nice job on the exposure with the filtered sunlight. Colors and detail look great. Very beautiful bird.

Lovely swan, great POV and colours. I love the look the swan is giving you.

Very nice pov. I love the blue hue that the sky has cast on the water. The pose and composition is great. I almost want to see the entire reflection but it may take away from the image. I can't tell. TFS. Very beautiful.

Hi Hilary,
Graceful pose of this white swan, seems like a balet dancer. Greatly captured and very nicely composed picture. Light was very well managed. Colors are great. Excellent shot and great PP works.

Felicitaciones y saludos... Ricardo

Image with an great sense aesthetic Hilary.
The beauty of the bird very well depicted, with a perfect POV, exhibiting all their proud plumage.
The areas of sun and shade are magnificent, producing a very pleasant effect.
The very symmetrical framing is very beautiful also... only has been ideal to show the entirety of the reflection.
Congratulations and regards... Ricardo

Hi Hilary,
I've been looking through your gallery and you have some great pictures here. This is beautiful, the light and shadow really adds some depth and interest. A great head-on POV and perfect pose from the Swan, with his head turned slightly. A good exposure, I don't think it could be better (my opinion of course), if you underexposed even a third here it might have killed off the light and shadow. Nicely framed, a beautiful image. Another approach here would be to zoom out and include the whole of the reflection, but a different shot completely. Great work!

Hello Hilary, this is a big improvement since the last time I critiqued on of your pictures. Very good colours and nice control on the exposure - maybe a slight OE patch where the sun is getting through but this is minor. Nice catchlight in the eye too. Well done.

Hi Hilary
This is a very nice photo. The POV is better than you give it credit for, especially as being high it gives us more of the reflections, which are what make this photo special, and a near-symettrical swan. Excellent tones in the water and lots of detail on the swan. Looks like you either used a fill-in flash or there was some bright light coming through trees. Which was it?

beautiful photo, great reflections and colors in the water and love the angle on the swan..very nice.. TFS
