Or Green Hairstreak

The sexes are very similar in appearance, but males can be distinguished by the presence of a small pale spot on each forewing. The plump caterpillar grows to 1.5 cm in length, and is flattened at each end. It is green in colour, with a brown head, has a dark line passing along the back and rows of diagonal yellowish-white markings.

Found throughout Europe, parts of North Africa and across Asia to Siberia. It is stable in most of Europe but has declined in several countries.

Common foodplants: Rock-rose (Helianthemum nummularium) and Common Bird's-foot-trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) are used on calcareous grassland, while Gorse (Ulex europeaus), Broom (Cytisus scoparius), and Dyer's Greenweed (Genista tinctoria) are used on heathland and other habitats. Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is used almost exclusively on moorland and throughout Scotland. Other foodplants include shrubs such as Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea), Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), Cross-leaved Heath (Erica tetralix), and Bramble (Rubus fruticosus).

Green Hairstreak colonies may be found on calcareous grassland, woodland rides and clearings, heathland, moorland, bogs, railway cuttings, old quarries, and rough, scrubby grassland. This species occurs on a wide range of soils but is strongly associated with scrub and shrubs, which are usually present at sites where it breeds.

Hello Ruta,
That's an excellent shot of the Green Hairstreak, very sharp and good natural colours. I like the composition and the way the butterfly is clinging on to the leaf!
TFS, Ulla
