Morpho-butterflies are among the most impressive species of the American tropics. When in flight, they are really amazing. The blue iridescent wings are seen from a far distance. However, when the Morphos settle and rest, they usually close their wings and the nice blue is no more visible. Neverhteless, they present their large wing underside which also shows nice colour patterns.
Many Nymphalidae icluding the forest Satyrinae and also the Morphinae can be attracted by rotten fruits like bananas. Admixture of alcoholic beverages to a certain degree increases the attractivity and may lead to drunken butterflies - no joke! You can find a number of recipes in the entomological literature. Each 'designer' is convinced of the efficacy of his mixture.
In the case shown squeezed bananas were used only. Because Morpho peleides is not so rare in the Sierra de Tilaran you can be successful.
The picture shows a close-up of a sucking
-- Morpho peleides.
The species occurs in Central and South America from Mexico to Colombis and Venezuela.
Wing span: about 11 cm.

Hello Peter,
Excellent close-up of this Morpho at the feeding table. Interesting details and lovely colours. Pity about the other one interfering!!
Thanks and regards, Ulla

So detail friend. Great macro, truely colour, nice DOF and good compo. But I wonder why you dont remove the other one on the left to get more perfect pic. I like it anyway.
TFS.

Hihi...another one wants to be popular, too...he is squeezing into the frame there :))
Splendid macro work here, Peter...as usual!
The details are great, the colors lovely and the light excellent.
Terrific work for a handheld at 1/60...and i'm guessing without a stabilizer :)

Bravo and TFS

Hello Peter
Very nice shot of butterfly,
Perfect focusing and beautiful
colors, Welldone

Hi Peter,
So you didn't have to use strong 'stimulants' to get this lovely butterfly into picture! There are two of them actually.
The partial view in this large macro illustrates the beauty of its underwings rather well.
TFS and take care.
Regards.
Ram

Hi Peter,
bin neidisch!!!
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Well done Peter.
I like the sharp detail I see, and DOF that has picked up the head, thorax, legs, and upper wing nicely :)
Very good color, POV, and exposed well also.
Have a great weekend!

Excellent close-up Peter. I like tight composition with well visible details on butterfly body. Veins and eyes on wings look superb. Very interesting subject well photographed and described

Very sharp macro Peter with excellent POV to show the beauty of this butterfly.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, background, framing, notes.

I like it: DOF (I believe that you could have used F7 or 8 without problems)

I don't like it: nothing.

So making drunk butterflies... good idea ;-)
Only as a game, I made a Workshop eliminating the partial image of the left.. I hope you like it.
Best regards... Ricardo

Hola Peter.- Un bella foto, verdaderamente muy nitida. Me agradan sus colores y textura. Buena luz y contraste. Saludos Luis52.

Hallo Peter,
Sehr gut ins Bild gestellt. Danke für diesen sehr schöne Falter.
Gruß´
Heinz

Peter,

Impressive shot. Nice details and well chosen POV. Sharpness is excellent. Only minor thing on the picture is the slightly overexposed piece of fruit at the left.
I like it a lot.
