Red-breasted Goose

Branta ruficollis

Red-breasted Geese breed over more than a million square kilometres in the Russian arctic, mostly on the Taimyr peninsula, and winter in temperate regions around the Black Sea in Romania, Bulgaria, and the Ukraine. These highly colourful geese are perhaps most well-known for their habit of nesting in close proximity to birds of prey, such as Peregrines, Rough-legged Buzzards and Snowy Owls. The birds of prey drive off marauding Arctic Foxes and skuas, while the geese provide an early warning system in return. In this way, up to ten pairs of Red-breasts can nest around one Peregrine eyrie. Most nests are within 40 metres of the Peregrine but some may be within a few metres. In comparison with other geese, Red-breasts have a delayed breeding cycle and this is thought to be to allow Peregrine nests to become established before the geese begin breeding.
Red-breasted Geese are still recognised as globally threatened despite the fact that the world population numbers over 100,000 birds. This is because most of the population is concentrated during winter at less than ten locations and at only four roosts.
Escalating hunting activity at the main roost sites in Bulgaria is an increasing problem, especially as many birds are shot by tourist hunters travelling from France, Italy and Spain. Conservation initiatives for Red-breasted Geese are now underway in Bulgaria and Romania and management plans are being produced for the most important roosts in Bulgaria at Shabla and Durankulak Lakes.

This goose looks a bit like the wood duck we have here in Canada. Excellent capture: sharp and nice colors. Well done.

Focus is a bit soft but I like the colours.

Superbe canard avec une bonne lumière qui fait bien resortir les couleurs. La netteté est aussi très bien bonne définition du plumage et du regard. Merci et bonne journée.

I love it very much. She is so cute :-)
