Das Schach- oder auch Damenbrett (Melanargia galathea, auch Agapetes galathea) ist ein Schmetterling (Tagfalter) aus der Familie der Augenfalter und gehört zu den häufigsten Arten seiner Familie in Mitteleuropa.

Die Falter erreichen eine Spannweite von bis zu 4,5 cm. Die Flügeloberseiten sind schwarz-weiß (bis gelblich) gefleckt.

Flugzeit:
Der Schmetterling fliegt von Ende Juni bis August.
Melanargia galathea ist in hügeligen Gebieten und Waldrändern mit Kalkböden und auf sehr verschiedenen Grasflächen anzutreffen.

Lebensweise:
Die überwinternden, verborgen lebenden Raupen fressen an weichen Gräsern, wie z.B. dem Honiggras. Sie sind grünlich oder sandfarben und längsgestreift (schwarz und weiß).

Hi Harm!

Very nice portrait. Classic composition, good details and sharpness. Right wing is slightly blurred. Black and white insect looks good on green BG.

Great image Harm Super sharp along the wing edges. Just a tad week on the right wing tip. Great natural colours. Well done!

A nice picture, the picture is sharp at one edge of the wing but not at the other edge, may be the position of this fellow made that. The sharpness along the body is superb. The details is also wonderful
