[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The False Heath Fritillary (Melitaea diamina) is so called because it superficially resembles the Heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia).

But this English name is not very appropriate, partly because diamina´s habitat is damp open meadows and partly because it is easy to see diamina's distinctly darker colour. But this misnomer is understandable since the Heath fritillary is very rare in Britain where the False Heath fritillary has never occured.
The Swedish name describes it as the Sooty Fritillary. The female is less sooty and has more spots on the hindwings.
It is, however, rare in Sweden occuring in a few localities in the South and Cental parts and it is fairly widespread but only locally common in most of Europe.
As its host food plant two species of Valeriana that occur in moist habitats it is threatened by land drainage and modern methods of agriculture.

This shot was taken at a distance of about two meters with my camera hand-held.

Hi Ivan

A wonderful diagonal composition with this very beautiful butterfly!
I really like the POV here - with its wings wide opened - and teh sharpness of the details.
Also the POV is great, the exposure isspot-on and the colros are charming and well saturated.
I quite like the framing, too, as well as the contrast between the light green of the grass and the darker colors of the butterfly.
Very well done!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi
very good butterfly shot, nice brown and orange colours. Good composition and pov.

Hello Ivan,
very clear and precise portrait of this rather unspectacular and rare little beauty. With very careful handling of contrast you have made even the slightest shades of colours well visible. Nice, well balanced composition.
Valuable addition to the TN collection of outstanding butterfly portraits of less known species.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hej Ivan,
this rare butterfly is a really beauty. Lovely colours and pattern. Sharpness and exposure are very good. The butterfly is well seen against the BG.
Well done.

De ska tydligen finnas här i närheten, vid Testeboån.
Jag får leta i vår och sommar.

Hi Ivan,
I very rarely use a telelens for taking shots of insects. Just because I often face the difficulty of motion in the picture.
But you seem to have a steady hand. Great work! Did you also use flash (looks a bit that way)? Also a nice butterfly. Must say I've never seen this species, but I think it's beautiful.
Regards, JAcob

Hello Argus,
a professional picture of diamina. The species can be recognized even on the thumbnail. Very good focus and sharpness and attractive natural colours as usual. The specimen you found is completely intact - I don't miss any scale on the wings' upperside!
Bewt wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan,
