[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Last year I found this moth in daytime but inactive and seem to be in bad shape. This one also found during daytime under shade and still in good health. I am not able to identify the species yet. A help would be appreciated. Wish you all Merry Christmat and a Happy New Year.

Family: Geometridae (Geometrid Moths)
Species: Celerena signata

GEOMETRIDAE: from the Greek "geo" (the earth) + "metron" (measure); refers to the larvae, which appear to be "measuring the earth" as they move.

Larvae generally have only two pairs of prolegs (at the hind end) rather than the usual five pairs in most lepidoptera; the lack of prolegs in the middle of the body necessitates the peculiar method of locomtion, drawing the hind end up to the thoracic legs to form a loop, and then extending the body forward.
The impression that it is measuring its journey is inescapable. The caterpillars are accordingly called loopers, spanworms, or inchworms.

Identification
adults usually have slender bodies and relatively large, broad forewings, often crossed by thin wavy lines; females of some species are wingless or have flightless atrophied wings
when at rest, many geometrid moths hold their wings away from the body and flat against the substrate (in contrast to most noctuid moths, which tend to fold their wings over their abdomen); some species/genera hold their wings in a characteristic position such as: flat & at right-angles to the body, or inclined 45 degrees above horizontal, or vertically over their back like a butterfly.

Celerena signata

Diagnosis: The striking grey and yellow facies is unmistakable.
Habitat preference: Lowland forest, particularly where there had been some degree of disturbance or extensive secondary forest.
Biology: Most records are at light at night, but the moth is often disturbed from vegetation in the forest understorey by day from its resting position on the lower surface of a leaf.

Great capture of a colourful species of moth new to me.

Hi Jitti

What a beautiful and colourful 'moth' you show us. Actually, looking at the photo I am slightly confused. Isn't this really a butterfly? I ask this because of the antennae which look more like those of a butterfly than that of a moth.

Anyway it is just lovely. Stunning colours, good details, complimentary darkish BG, and good exposure control resulted in a very nice reproduction.
