When I posted an image of an Large Chequered Skipper i remembered also having taken pictures with flash. I'm normally not too keen on flash images but sometimes it creates the needed depth of filed or sharpness. Here's another image of the Large Chequered Skipper but now taken with flash. The result was a dark background (it was a ring flash). I could have changed the bachground colour to a lighter colour but decided to leave it this way.

You managed right, imho.
I like this dark BG that gives more value to the subject.
Well done,
Andrea

Hi Jacob,
this is a nice picure wiht good details and nice colours.
The subject is well seen against the dark BG. I often use a flash for my macro's but I try to balance the flash with the dayligh to avoid too dark BG. But sometimes it works well as in this picture.
Well done.

Hello Jacob,
The use of flash in this instance is positive. It provides a good contrasting BG for this rare skipper and allows good sharpness. I agree with you abou avoiding flash as much as possible to avoid the 'night time' effect, but here it seems to work well.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

bonjour jacob
l'ensemble manque un peu de lumiere je pense, mais beaucoup de details sur ce cliché.
netteté excellente.

Hello JAcob,
Not one of your best shots but it's great to see this Skipper which we don't have in Sweden.Good details and nice colours. I wonder how common it is in Holland?
TFS and regards, Ulla

Preciosos detales, buena iluminación que hace resaltar la imagen. Bonita foto Jacob.
Hasta luego, JL.

I think this one is nice also. The dark BG adds some drama to the image. It really sets off the great details...especially in the stem. The ring flash seems to give a nice even light on the subject. Thanks for sharing

Very nice macro Jacob with great contrast on the dark background.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, colors, lighting, background, framing.

I like it: notes.

I don't like it: the lack of the values of the image.

Very appropriate illumination of the ring flash with excellent definition.
Best regards... Ricardo

Hello Jacob
I think that the result is really good. There is a perfect contrast between the beautiful wings of the skipper and the background. Sharpness, color, lighting, composition... All is perfect!
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.
Best wishes

Hi Jacob,
A very nice, sharp, and crisp clear skipper image. Good use of flash, the dark background isolate the skipper nicely. TFS this impressive picture.

Hello Jacob,
Heteropterus morpheus - preciously rare species in an excellent image!
Wonderful details both on the butterfly and on the plant, well balanced colours, and a powerfully reduced composition.
I might be tempted to add some brightness just in order to see some more structures in the dark parts e.g. the eyes, but no doubt the picture looks great as it is.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

...and I think that you did well to let the BG this dark as it makes your subject stands out well. You caught very good details in a nice POV with good colors. I would have liked to see your camera's setting for this one. I think that composition is a bit too centered but I guess it is a matter of personal taste :) Well done and well seen Jacob. Thanks,
Claudine
