Scientific classification
Kingdom: Plantae

Division: Magnoliophyta

Class: Magnoliopsida

Order: Solanales

Family: Solanaceae

Genus: Solanum

Species: S. dulcamara

Binomial name
Solanum dulcamara
Bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara) is a species of vine in the potato genus Solanum, family Solanaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia, and widely naturalised elsewhere, including North America, where it is an invasive problem weed. It occurs in a very wide range of habitats, from woodlands to scrubland, hedges and marshes.

PlantBittersweet is a semi-woody herbaceous perennial vine, which scrambles over other plants, capable of reaching a height of 4 m where suitable support is available, but more often 1-2 m high. The leaves are 4-12 cm long, roughly arrowhead-shaped, and often lobed at the base. The flowers are in loose clusters of 3-20, (1-1.5 cm) across, star-shaped, with five purple petals and yellow stamens and style pointing forward. The fruit is an ovoid red berry about 1 cm long, soft and juicy, poisonous to humans and livestock but edible for birds, which disperse the seeds widely. As with most Solanum species, the foliage is also poisonous to humans.

Bittersweet is used in homeopathic medicine and herbalism. Its main usage is for conditions that have an impact on the skin, mucous membrane and the membrane (synovial membrane) around the joints. Bittersweet is considered to be an important remedy for treating herpes infections and allergies.

The name bittersweet is also confusingly used in some areas for some species in the genus Celastrus (the Staff vines, family Celastraceae), e.g. American bittersweet (C. scandens) and Oriental bittersweet (C. orbiculatus).

Other common names include Trailing Nightshade, Bittersweet, Trailing Bittersweet, Climbing Nightshade, Blue Bindweed, Bitter Nightshade, Fellenwort, Dogwood, Woody Nightshade, Poisonflower, Poisonberry, Snakeberry, and Scarlet Berry

Hi Jose.
I am in delight from yours of a fine picture. Lighting and colours are amazing at high level. They are simply wonderful: rich, clear, and perfect saturated. Sharpness of the plant and blurriness of the BG are outstanding too. You have composed picture and introduced a small nice image amazedly. BRAVO. Superb work.

Hi Jose

This is a splendid post with a very interesing presentation.
I'm happy to see this wonderful plant in more than one state, but i have to say that the flower is much more apealing, with all those brilliant and vivid colors.
The details here are superbly sharp, the DOF is excellent and it isolated it very well from the nicely blurred BG and the exposure is spot-on.
Very nice composition and presentation, too.

Bravo and TFS

Estupendos detalles. La verdad es que no sólo en los niños está desarrollada la capacidad de asombro y lo digo por mí, claro.
Preciosos el colorido y la composición en sí.
Todo un maestro.
Salud, Juan Luis.

Aha, a Solanum vine, Jose! I am thrilled because I heard the name only yesterday from Ulla and then followed it up to ID the flowers I had posted by way of my dedication to you and Jose II (I hope he doesn't mind being called 'Jose II'!).
Your absolutely stunning capture of this beautiful flower along with the inset picture of its fruit is a pleasure to look at. I do not know how you have managed this shot in which the flower is illuminated from below, but it is sheer magic, my friend.
Warm regards.

Lovely composition and great colours perfect dof nice light and great sharpness TFS rgds Necip.
