Another shot of my favourite butterfly The Tailed Jay.

The main thing which attarcts me to shoot tailed Jay is that this butterfly is so restless that it hardly sits at any place & capturing it is always fun. This insect looks so beautiful with the combination of yellowish green pattern on dark black wings.

The Tailed Jay (Graphium agamemnon) is a predominantly green and black tropical butterfly that belongs to the swallowtail family. The butterfly is also called Green Spotted Triangle, Tailed Green Jay or the Green Triangle. It is a common, non-threatened species native to India, Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia and into Australia. Several geographic races are recognized.

Range
Southern India to Saurashtra, Northern India (Kumaon to Assam), Nepal, Sri Lanka, Andamans, Nicobars, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Kampuchea, southern China (including Hainan), Taiwan, South East Asia to Papua & New Guinea, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, and Australia (northern Queensland).

Habitat
Once found primarily close to wooded country where there is a fairly heavy rainfall, the Tailed Jay is now very common at low elevations and regularly seen in gardens and urban areas due to its foodplant, Polyalthia longifolia (False Ashoka or Mast Tree), being widely used as an ornamental tree.

Habits
Strong and restless fliers, they are very active butterflies and flutter their wings constantly even when at flowers. They are seldom seen drinking from damp patches. The males are particularly fond of feeding from flowers such as Lantana, Ixora, Mussaenda and Poinsettia. The females are more likely caught when looking for foodplants or laying eggs.

Tailed Jays are active throughout the year but their abundance depends upon the local monsoon and availability of the larval host plants. The butterflies generally fly among the tree-tops but descend to ground level in search of flowers or host plants. Because of their relatively fast life cycle (just over one month from egg to adult), Tailed Jays are multivoltine and may produce up to 7–8 broods per year.

I have also posted a workshop of the same shot witha tighter composition.

Nice quality you have achieved here Pankaj, the colours really compliment each other and there is a nice sharpness about the image. BG smooth and out of focus.
Well done TFS
Simon

Hello Pankaj,
I like the colors of this little fellow and details you caught. It is a great pose, well composed. I also like the crop you did in WS. Nice one again! Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Pankaj,
I liked the composition here , with directional space. The colors are amazing too, the lighting is good , but i feel the butterfly is on the softer side! any ways a good picture

Hello Pankaj,
This is a pretty good shot of the Tailed Jay, even though it is not the best one that you have posted of this species. Nevertheless this is well composed with good BG and the blurry vibrating wings give the shot some dinamism.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Pankaj,
It is often lovely to take a step back from the butterfly and include its environment. This is beutifully composed with just the tops of the flowers included. Normally one wouldn't think of cropping like this but it really works in your very fine shot. Nice gentle background too. I prefer this one to the workshop.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Pankaj

Another superb butterfly shot from you!
I really wnat to referr to the two shots you posted first: i really like both (this one and the one from the WS) but i think this one was a much better and more original composition. It kinda let the butterfly "breath" and shows a bit more of those lovely flowers, too.

The photo istelf is great, with wonderful colors, impeccable DOF that also blurres the BG very nicely and and excellent POV.
Nice details and exposure, as well.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Pankaj
Wonderful butterfly and wonderful composition. Good sharpness, dof and pov. I think the o.v. more interesting than the workshop. Is very well presented. A good election.
Congrats and TFS.

Hello Pankaj,
Lovely Tailed Jay. A slender with looking swallowtail. Very nice composition and well done picture. TFS and congratulations,
JC

Maravillosa imagen. Los colores son realmente fantásticos con una luz ideal.
Perfecto disparo amigo, JL.

Pankaj,

Nice picture. I like your idea of capturing Tailed Jay along with some more flowers in a row. It appears that the Tailed Jay would jump to the next flower and the bud as it appears in the picture. Great picture.

Regards,
Murali Santhanam

It certainly is a handsome butterfly, Pankaj. The fellow must be fluttring its wings vigorously while you took this shot because one of the wingtip is blurred by the motion and that too despite 1/1000!
A very fine composition with the yellow flowers matching the colours on the butterfly's wings.
Bye and take care.

hi pankaj!
nice macro with fine colours
and nice lightning
fine composition
good work!

Hi Pankaj

A shot that has plenty of lovely colour. Nice composition and presentation. Excellent BG. I was at a tropical butterfly house yesterday and saw a Tailed Jay, but unfortunately there appeared to be only the one which stayed well away, so not photo I am afraid! :-)

Ricardo

Aesthetically a pleasant capture Pankaj starting from the accurate point of view together with the elected framing, with the butterfly uncentered on an appropriate bottom, due to obtained tight DOF.
The flowers appear lightly over exposed but they don't deteriorate the quality of the presentation.
My best greetings... Ricardo

the flowers here really take over and balance the shot making a good situation shot..not just an analytical shot of a butterfly's detail
well lit and full of interest
