I came to Florida to photograph birds, but cloudy rainy weather on the first day forced a change in plans. I went to a local nature preserve where I could be close to my car or a building to avoid the rain showers. I found this Pipevine Swallowtail sitting perfectly still. It was very cold, so he was not moving. This allowed me to drag out the tripod and set up for a decent shot. A fill flash exposure was used at -1 stop compensation to help with the very poor light conditions. With the slow shutter speed needed to make this work, only 2 of 10 shots were sharp enough to keep.(slight breeze) Using the 1.4 extender gave me enough room to back farther away and get good DOF at f8.

Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor)

I eventually got some good bird shots over the next few days!

Thanks for looking,
Scott

Hi Scott,

A well captured macro butterfly, you did an excellent job considering the meteorological conditions (with poor light, wind and rain) however I suppose the temperature is better as here at the moment (-13C),well done and TFS

Hi Scott,
This is a real beauty. You caught this swallowtail sharply and present it with a fine BG and it happens to be on a very attractive an contrasting flower.
This one is freshly emerged, which explains why it was absolutely still (still drying its wings) and apparently not interested in nectar yet. Normally these swallowtails are tricky to photograph as they are constantly vibrating their wings when feeding.
Look foreward to seeing your Florida bird shots!
TFS,
Regards, Ivan

Hello Scott,
Excellent work under low light conditions. On the one hand the cold temps slow down the b-fly, but the overcast conditions certainly increases the degree of difficulty..When I shoot these here they never slow down, and the conditions are reversed.
I like the < exposure balanced with fill. Well composed with very good sharpness, details, and colors..
So you're heading back today then?
Very well done.

This is a such perfect pose, POV and DOF with natural lightning. It is a very sharp capture. Thanks
Clauidne

Hi Scott.
Bravo, my friend. Amazing subject and excellent quality of the picture. Great combination of extremely rich and pleasant to eye dark , green and red colour tones. Perfect sharpness of the butterfly and flower. Precisely selected DOF: excellent blurred BG is very expressive and highlights the sharpness and details of the main subjects. Superb work. My compliments and TFS.

Hi Scott, you might find he was too cold to move! In the butterfly house we find that if it is an overcast day the butterflies hardly move, but once the sun comes out they fly and fly!!
well captured, nice and sharp, and good composition. TFS

Hi Scott

This is a new kind of butterfly for me and I just love that interesting white dotted body. The bright red flower provided a nice prop for the shot and the under parts of the butterfly’s wings really show some excellent colours, patterns, and contrasts. The well removed BG is well OOF and makes the insect stand out of the frame and the great DOF ensured some very sharp details. Good management of the exposure, supplemented by the fill-in flash provided superb lighting.

Good work and TFS.

Loot

what a beautiful butterfly which seems to be in perfect condition. Everything is just spot on, and you can't tell that the weather was poor. I was thinking that you had been to a butterfly conservatory to get a picture like this, but to find it in the wild in amazing (for me).
