The Blue-winged Kookaburra, Dacelo leachi, 42cm, gives more of a bark, cough or maniacal cackle than a laugh. It is less wide-spread, being confined to the coastal 100 k of the Northern half of Australia, whereas the Laughing Kooka is spread throughout the Eastern states & has been introduced into Tasmania & West Australia.

It can be hard to tell from the Laughing Kooka, which in Queensland has a stronger blue in its wings than in the South, but the true Blue-winged also has a blue rump, a white eye [instead of brown] & a finely streaked head & ear. The male has a blue tail.

A Kookaburra family defends a territory of 1 to 4 acres. It may be in open eucalypt forest, on a busy farm or in a garden suburb. In this state the breeding couple come back to NSW about August & start nest hunting, inspecting tree trunk cavities or vigorously stabbing termite nests with their strong bills to make a new hole. However they usually eventually select the old hole from the previous season, & have been known to use the same nest for 15 years.
Kookaburras mate for life.

Often several females are seen in the family group, but these are the daughters from previous seasons. Young males are chased off at the end of their 1st season.
Breeding here usually occurs in September or October [earlier in Queensland]. The mother lays 3 or 4 almost round white eggs & incubates them 50% of the time, while her husband, & daughters from the previous 2-4 years, do 30% of the incubating, which lasts about 25 days. For 20% of the time the eggs are unattended, & may be taken by gliders, possums or occasionally goannas. The chicks are born blind & naked , & for a couple of months the whole family helps feed them. One female has been seen to make 40 feeding trips to the nest in a single day.

The nest stinks with scraps of old meat, but the nestlings have a strong muscular cloaca at their rear end, & are soon able to squirt their liquid waste out the mouth of the nest for a distance or 1 or 2 feet! After they leave the nest at about 35 days, family members continue to feed them for another 6 weeks although they are adult sized. They teach them to bash their catch to death on a branch or rock while holding it in their bill, & they give them laughing lessons which take the juveniles a couple more weeks to master.

This part I have from this very interresting side. http://member.rivernet.com.au/balehirs/Bishyp6Birds.htm

Hi Teunie

Another great capture from you!
This is a beautiful species of bird...and we rarely get the chance to see it here on TN...so thanks for sharing :)
I really like all the colors here and the details and on every feather on this Blue-winged Kookaburra.
The lighting is also great and the contrast with the BG very good.
Excellent DOF, too and a lovely composition all-in-all!

Bravo and TFS

There is wonderful color and sharpness on your kookaburra, Teunie. The framing feels a little bit tight to me, but otherwise it is a great shot.

Hi Teunie, these birds have quite a strange shape - with their big head and beak. Very good close-up and the colours and details are really good. TFS

Hi Teunie

Technically, this is a stunning shot. I love the colours and details you show in the plumage. The only nit is that crop is too tight for my liking. More space above and in front would work better. :-)

Dag Teuni,

Teunie this one glows in the dark! The perch and the bird make a perfect X. Well presented [ colours, sharpness], but boxed in! Tfs, J.

Hi Teunie

Wow, what a fabulous shot and to think that it comes out of your archives. Truly amazing(?) and it went straight to my favourites.

This is a beautiful specimen with its puffed up plumage. You have really captured amazing details, stunning colours and remarkable contrasts in its feathers. The BG is absolutely outstanding since the disparity between the dark backdrop and the brightly lit bird makes it jump out of the frame. Although you do not mention it, it does seem like you made use of the fill-in flash which (if it was the case) was excellently applied. There is only one small nit, but since it was already mentioned by a number of critiquers I will not go deeper into it, but it would have been great if you allowed more space in front and also a little bit at the top.

Great work and TFS.

PS. I have mentioned this to you on a number of occasions, but you are a far better photographer that what the number of photos in your portfolio suggest. However, you never disappoint with each new posting you do since it is always a praiseworthy shot.

G'day Teunie!
Beautiful portrait of a fellow Aussie! Trust an Olympus to get true to life colours, too!
Best wishes,

Hallo Teunie,
Ik kwam deze foto nog tegen in je verzameling. Schitterende kleuren, goed contrast, scherpte, dieptewerking en compositie. Een foto van hoge kwaliteit.

Hello Teuni,
what an excellent capture. The focus and the sharpness are spot on. Very colourful bird and you have captured it from a good POV. He /she looks bit serious .I liked the expression and the pose of the bird. Overall a great picture.

Hi Teunie.
This bird is a fascinating looking one if in my opinion somewhat gawky too.It is busy with details and good colour and you have very good DOF,but still there is something about it that I find hard to truly like,I think it is the beak it sports I looks awkward somehow. The bird is what it is and it is one of nature's fine citizens and for that I respect it.Thanks for showing us this unusual looking bird. Bob

great flashy portrait, TFS Ori

Very close Teunie, lots of detail.
Excellent color, DOF, and exposed well.
Really stands out in the close comp frame too :)

Hallo Theunie
Thanks for welcoming me to the Trek Nature community. It has only been an adventure and incredible learning experience but I would not have been able to achieve any of this if it was not for Loot’s incredible knowledge in the technical aspects of photography and the love he has for nature that rubbed off on me. This Laughing Kookaburra has a very impudent but "old man’s “look on its face, and what a show off hairstyle. I mean feather style. It actually looks as if has been greased for the occasion. Lovely close-up. I like the different shades of coloured feathers on its tailpiece. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
