This photo is not only a piece of history of one day of snow in the Netherlands, but also a piece of history from a day of storm. About two weeks ago Europe got hit by a very heavy storm that paralized cities and towns throughout the entire west coast. What I can remember is that a few towns in Norway were without electricity for at least a day, towns in France got flooded and in several countries people died by falling trees.

While I am writing this, something came to mind. The above is facts that we know, or can find in on the internet, but what about nature, is there any information on how many animals died or how many trees fell? I am almost certain that this information is no where to be found. I do think that a lot of animals have suffered from this storm and from the snow since the temperatures have been higher then normal and some birds did not fly south, or at least not as far as normal.

Back to the photo. This was taken during the one day, or actually half a day of snow we got. It is taken in the shire of the landgrave of Rechteren Limpurg Almelo. This is the entrance way to the estate of the landgrave. In the foreground you see the evidence of that stormy day. To get a better idea of what the shire looks like, please click the following links:

Hello Niek,
Beautiful winter landscape.POV,framing,DOF you managed, details and visual impact are excellent.
TFS..:-)

Niek this is an outstanding photograph.

You have got everything right here:
- Excellent composition with the track leading us in, the foreground interest of the logs and the tunnel of the trees disappearing into the distance.
- Exposure is spot on for the snow and we get a natural representation of what the scene was really like.
- Sharpness from front to back essential in this type of landscape shot.

I also like the human figure far in the distance, shows that no matter what the weather people will always carry on with life!

Really is an excellent shot of the snow we had across Europe.

Regards
Simon

Hoi Niek,
Prachtige compositie.

Jammer
Groeten, JAcob

I had been thinking the same thing during the terrible deep freezes that gripped the middle of my country and the 10 feet!!! of snow that hit up state New York. I'm sure that wildlife loss was substantial.

This is a good photo Niek. Both the illusion of depth and the depth of focus are excellent. I really like that one figure way down the road. I like the way that snow can simplify compositions. I like the foreground elements leading into the scene and the road taking the viewer into infinity. You have a nice range of values and the snow looks more white than gray. Nice work.

Hi Niek and sorry for the delay (today i had to turn in a projet...so last night was really busy).

Another superb winter scenary from you!
I really liked the point you made in your note...nobody even mentioned any imact any of this had on the flora or fauna...sad :(

The picture is again superb, with a very complete composition - with excellent key elements everywhere - foreground, middle and BG.
I really like the trees on the sides - thay make an outstanding natural framing for the view, and that man (on bicyle ?) there is a great touch, giving great dimenssion for everythig and superb perspective of the depth.
Details and contrast are splendid and the exposure is spot-on!

I just hope i leaned at least one or two tricks from your last winter shots, because i just booked a 4 day trip in the mountains of Slovakia today and i'm leaving on sunday :)
BTW...any last moment tips? ;)

Cheers, my friend and TFS
Horia

PS: another even more stunning handheld...1/8 WOW! I was kidding before about those surgeon precision of your...but they seem to make their way into reality :)

Hi Niek,
An excellent winter composition in the vertical format. Great use of the downed limbs in the foreground to enhance the composition. This looks like you could have taken this near my hose today. We got hammered by a ice and snow storm yesterday, and this could easily pass for one of our rural roads. Looks great!

Hello Niek,
Beautiful, calm winter scene. The color in the fallen tree trunks adds a nice warmth to the picture. I like the composition and the pov.
Best wishes,

Hi Niek

You seem to be enjoying the snow. You certainly have some lovely images. I love the FG details in the logs and the track disapeering into the distance. Just gorgeous

Hello Niek !
This is such a wonderful picture ! This snow-covered forest seems to come out directly from a beautiful fairy-tale ! :-) It looks quiet and peaceful. I love your POV here, with the fallen trees in the FG and the enchanted forest in the BG. Excellent exposure and colors. Very well done !
Valerie.

Great composition Niek, and the control of the light in the difficult conditions is excellent. I really like the 'man' at the far end of teh road which just adds that little something ot the distance.

I'm guessing the wood in the foreground are trees that came down in the storms. I know I lost about 50 or so trees in our woodland in total. I shall have to collect alot of seedlings/berries and nuts this year to help replace them.

Hi Niek,
Such a cool winter shot. One can feel the chill just by looking at it. Very well managed DOF, POV, sharpness and the composition. Oohh..!!
Kudos.

Salut Niek
Une superbe image hivernale.
Mais je commence à avoir hâte d'en sortir de cet hiver à -20C. Pas toi? Ça donne quand même de belles images comme la tienne.
Bravo et merci....JP

I love the composiiton here Niek! Looks like a a contrast between the fury of a storm (downed tree) followed by the peaceful serenity of a fresh blanket of snow covering the trees.
I like the straight lines made by recent tire tracks on the road, which makes one follow the lines up the road; taking in the beautiful scenery along the way.
Brilliantly done Niek, I think this is one of your best works!

Hoi Niek,

Je hebt de sneeuw mooi vast weten te leggen, ook al was het maar een halve dag :-)
Mooi standpunt, prachtige compositie, door de boomstammen op de voorgrond zit er veel diepte in je foto.
Een mooi winterlandschap!

Groetjes, Nel

I really like this one, Niek. The overall scene is beautiful, but I especially love the two small elements of the color in the tree and the person along the road. I can't compare to the non PP work, but the final product is wonderful with great details in the snowy trees.
Mike

Hey Niek,
Nice composition! With all of the white snow, the tracks and the trees really help build a nice composition. It looks like the road could go on forever. TFS!

Hi Niek, beautiful winter shoot the compo real great with the foreground remembering that winter is hard on nature.TFS

Hi Niek,
I miss snow!
This lovely landscape is very well composed.
I like the POV and the alternation between the white of the snow and the dark bark of the trees.
TFS!

Hi Niek

Stunning shot. The composition is faultless. Lovely the tones. Awesome camera work! :-)

Hi Niek,
This is a bold composition with the diagonal starting almost in the middle of the right side and the pieces of the broken tree as a big lump in the bottom left corner. Actually, this works very well with the broken pieces providing an anchor for your landscape into which we travel along the tracks in the snow. The colour in the wood brings life of into the frozen scene. The human figure provides a tiny yet solid focal point. Exposure is perfect. And your note (as always) is most interesting. TFS.

Daniel

Hi Niek ,
So nice shot.
